Gordon R
Whilst Starmer has declared some of the freebies, he did not accurately describe them. Clothes were described as office funds etc. Before retirement, I received a couple of gifts from the Hong Kong Police - a glass replica of Police HQ Hong Kong and a Police tie. Both had to be declared and I was only allowed to retain them as the Hong Kong Police would regard it as an insult if they were returned. Newbie to this
57 minutes ago, Mr. Merkel said: I cut and pasted this from the Spectator, Liam Conlon MP maybe a good guy, but this is why accepting donations is wrong, he is a new MP but has already registered 44K in donations since July 2024 he has been corrupted by the system from day one, a 10K donation from Lord Alli was accepted to help with canvassing From The Spectator :- It seems that bad headlines run in Sue Gray’s family. After a week of newspaper reports suggesting that Keir Starmer’s chief of staff is to blame for the government’s ails, now it is the turn of her son to face the wrath of Fleet Street. Liam Conlon, who was elected last month as the MP for Beckenham and Penge, has quickly been earmarked as one to watch. Within days of his election, he was appointed as a parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Transport. Talk about a rapid rise: perhaps he knows someone at the top? Unfortunately for Conlon, his new appointment has landed him in a spot of bother with the Mail on Sunday. For the newspaper points out today that the ministerial aide accepted a £4,000 donation from Britain’s biggest train drivers’ union – just months before his department offered it an inflation-busting pay rise. On Friday the Aslef union announced a wave of fresh strikes – less than 48 hours after it was offered a pay deal that would boost the average driver’s salary by 14 per cent to £69,000. A few hours later, the first register of MPs’ interests for the new parliament was published, showing that the newly-elected MP had declared the £4,000 donation in his first ever entry. It is understood the donation was made to Conlon soon after he was selected as a Labour candidate for the constituency at the end of last year. Given his mother’s high profile, Steerpike suspects Conlon’s entries will be one to watch… Seems they are all whoring themselves, or more accurately whoring UK PLC. 🤬🤬🤬
Mr. Merkel
26 minutes ago, Dave-G said: So is it 4K or 44K? Hi, the article is about 5 weeks old, since the a total of £44,000 has been declared as registered interests by 2nd August. Hope that clears things. JohnfromUK
30 minutes ago, Dave-G said: So is it 4K or 44K? I believe it was £4K from the train drivers Union (just before granting them a big rise) and a total of £44K registered, with £10K from Lord Waheed Alli. It has also 'been said' that he got the candidacy for a seat due to his mother's position in the Labour Party (Starmer's "Chief of Staff") All this from the party that accused the Tories of being tainted (they were) and how much cleaner Labour were (they weren't)
Dave-G
Thanks for clearing that up. I think any and all gifts should be officially called bribes. One rule for MP's and another for the general public.
Flashman
Just announced that Labour are bunging £1.5Bn to miners - another union donor it remember - £22Bn black hole and pensioners must suffer.
JohnfromUK
8 minutes ago, Dave-G said: Thanks for clearing that up. I think any and all gifts should be officially called bribes. One rule for MP's and another for the general public. There are two main laws with which I (as a UK based employee of an American company) had to follow on potential Bribery. The American Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) which (as I understand it) applied to all Americans and extended to cover employees of Companies based in America (and so subject to American Law) and business conducted in America. The UK Anti Bribery Act - which replaced earlier legislation in 2010 I think. These were drummed into us and we had several hours of training regularly on the FCPA (provided both on line and in person) by our American parent company - who took it VERY seriously. The UK Act was applicable to us - but in almost all aspects (certainly for my role) was very similar to the FCPA. It is not clear to me if these would apply to MPs because the way they were presented to us (as employees) were that they applied to 'the Company' and the company 'rolled the application of the law down' to it's employees through the company's own procedures, checks, and registers of compliance. These were in some cases more detailed and onerous than the FCPA itself because they included the levels of recording and traceability that the company used to (should the need ever arise) have 'evidence' of compliance. 6 minutes ago, Flashman said: pensioners must suffer Pensioners generally don't vote Labour. Hi, MPs are classified as office holders are are therefore exempt from employment legislation and certain tax laws, certainly the reason why they don't pay tax on donations. If donations have to be made I don't understand why they are not given to the party as a whole rather than to individual MPs.

Flashman
Read Rosie Duffield’s resignation letter today from the Labour Party. Gordon R
Sadly not. A couple of lads from the Hong Kong Police came over to this country in about 2008. After meeting with them, I took them for lunch at the Trafford Centre Chinese restaurant - at their request. They said the frontage of that restaurant was a reasonable copy of Hong Kong. At their suggestion, I drank Chinese herbal tea, which was dire, but I got through it with a smile. They were Manchester United fans and I drove them to Old Trafford and then to City's ground on our way to dropping them off at Leeds. On the M62, going across Saddleworth Moor, they kept asking if we were nearly there. They couldn't grasp the amount of open space and said there was very little in Hong Kong. They adopted English sounding names, as is their way, to make it easier for us in the UK. I kept in touch by email with one of them - Wilson Fong - for a number of years. He rose to the highest ranks in Hong Kong Police. Great lad, who said my Mandarin Chinese was "good for a foreigner". I used Babelfish. Very friendly and very sharp people. If people voted for a well meaning child, you have to look at the alternatives / opposition. No one voted for Labour, they voted for no more Torys for better or worse. We’re all now finding out what ‘worse’ looks like. Absolute shambles. We’re so screwed. The knock on is consumer confidence will tumble, growth slow / reverse and along with the Labour spaff fest, interest rates will rise. Indeed, all the predicted rate cuts under the Torys are now indefinitely on hold.

enfieldspares
If Lord Ali has all that money to give away he clearly isn't being taxed highly enough is what red and true "old Labour" would have said. Not the Oliver Twist "Please Sir can I have some more" of Free Gear Keir and whatever iteration of Labour his lot are claiming, this week, to be.
