Is it best just to knock on doors then

Yes door knocking would be my first approach but if they say no, you could always leave your card in the hope someday they may phone you.

As Scully said they can only say no….or if your lucky yes.

The first thing you need to do before finding out who the landowner is , is to find the field you are asking permission for , you will also need to get the crop right , very easy to make the mistake in saying it is o s r and then it turn out it is a field of fodder beet for sheep grazing . don't call round when he is just about to sit down for his dinner and if he do give you the go ahead then don't take any of your mates until you have got on friendly terms .

Good Luck and depending on where you are then you might need some luck if everyone around your way is looking for the same thing .    MM

that changes everything…..you have a farm where you shoot and importantly you have a farmers name, get knocking some doors.

Every farmer I know (lots) sees door knockers seeking shooting permission as a damn nuisance and there is no way any of them would be given permission.

Yes, same here, keep your ear to the ground and wait until someone moans about a shooter never turning out.

Then you offer your assistance for a day or two and you are in.

If you do a good job, other landowners may well offer you more land to shoot over.

You have to be patient, it isn't just walk up and chat and you are in.

I sometimes think shooters knocking on doors asking permission are like a modern version of old-time salesmen peddling Encyclopedia Britannica door to door.
A few reported success because they were natural or well trained salesmen.
Most that tried it soon gave up because ratio of No to Yes responses was high and a No was often delivered in a rude manner.

Rejection is even harder to take when asking for permission because you are trying to sell yourself, so it's personal.

You don't see many door-to-door salespeople nowadays because better sales methods have been evolved which are more efficient.
The goal is to cast as wide a net as possible and get prospects to qualify themselves before you even speak to them.

I once placed an advert in a free adverts newspaper offering "free pest control services" and specifically mentioned rabbits.
It seemed like a long shot and I was surprised when a nice lady phoned me asking what I was offering.
I told her I was just looking for some rabbit shooting.
She said "well we've got lots of rabbits!
She wasn't a farmer's wife, she lived with her husband on a small holding with about 3 acres of fields which they let out to people with ponies to whom the rabbit burrows were a hazard.  Strangely, it turned out her husband worked at the same place as me, which made arranging visits simple.

The point is I would never have dreamed of knocking on their door asking for shooting, but they found me because I used a mass media method.
Admittedly I only ever got one call from that advert, but then again I think I only ever advertised once, so my hit rate still stands at 100% 🙂

Today, social media offers multiple ways to reach mass markets for your offering (you and your guns...)
I've heard of groups on Facebook which exist to offer free pest control to local farmers.
I've also heard of people handing out flyers at farmers markets and the like.
They might also get attention if displayed in commercial enterprises which farmers and horse owners frequent.

If I was designing a flyer I'd include a (smiling) picture of myself, well dressed in clothes that would look at home in a country setting.

I'd also set up a simple web page with some "nice" pictures and useful little articles about what to expect from a non-commercial pest controller, making clear on the rest of the website that I possess all the desirable attributes I'm outlining. The trick is to look for ways to build your credibility so prospects feel they can trust you before they even get in touch.  I'd give an email address AND phone number where they can contact me.  Most web templates have some sort of contact form but I hate filling these in and expect not to get a reply when I do, so I wouldn't bother with that.  Obviously the flyer should have a link to the web page so they can go there to find out more about you to help them decide if you're their guy.

I put a pest control advert in our local paper on a saturday morning and followed up every reply i got and dished out a laminated card to every body a few were surprised about the nice cards and took them and pinned them up on there notice board , I got a lot of land that way and often the folk next door would come over and say so and so mentioned you where a rabbit trapper i see your out mid week a few times would you like to do ours ?, give them a card too even speaking to them and they had somebody gave them a card a few passed it onto friends that where looking for somebody and one phoned me years later asking if i was still interested

I also know a lot of farmers but I do not know the opinion of everyone of them, unlike yourself, the ones that have mentioned door knockers have just made a comment on the fact they had a couple of lads asking about shooting, must say I have never heard one farmers tell me they are a dame nuisance.

if you go at the right time and go about it the right way you can get shooting from door knocking.

Must be a different breed of farmer up Darbyshire. :whistling:
