Kayaker and great white shark

Not my video. I don't normally post other people's videos, but worth a watch. A bit too close to home. I spent 3 years obsessed with kayak fishing and fished not too far away from the spot in the video. Also, a huge great white has been spotted in my backyard over the last few days. The area I fish all the time and sometimes dive!

Well I watched that, the lass in the film put some large live baits out.

Then when Carcharodon carcharias turned up, she cut her lines and headed parallel with the shore.

Now I will admit, like Mel, I am sitting on a chair thousands of miles away and have no experience of fishing on the sea from a kayak.

But surely a move to the shoreline and then see what the shark does would have taken her out of danger far quicker?

I mentioned a few weeks ago ( here or thl), about my first experience with a dolphin , whilst I was fishing on my kayak , with my legs dangling in the water.

That few seconds as that large grey fin zipped through the water towards me , took years off my life 🥺.

Was she not a bloke ? As said I would have headed to rocks and hope there was a way out of the water, You would think there would be some sort of deterent like a banger you could use,  A few years back I had a Minke whale swim under my 16 ft boat [almost in touching range], its amazing to be that close to un-stoppable nature that has no fear of you, I was concerned it might come up under me and pitch me in the water,

Wonder how long it took to go back fishing .?.

It would have taken me a millisecond,  to decide that I would never ever ever , go kayaking again , ever ever , for the rest of my life ...  ever 😁.

The clean up operation in my pants might have taken a bit longer though ☺️

Many years ago (1970's) my younger brother and I were in Ullapool and took a 10ft dinghy out on Loch Broom to catch a few mackerel and a basking shark (with a wide open mouth the size of a tunnel) went underneath our dinghy.

Yes, I know it was filtering plankton. Yes I know they are supposed to be harmless - but we were off that water in record time and I am still not comfortable in any boat less that 30ft and with at least 3 feet of freeboard.

That video made me sweat!

Sharks and cows scare me. Not encountered a shark other than a NZ view in the surf but cows, nope not for me.

Cows are fine unless they have calves .But horses kick and bite and the only think i know to look at is the ears going back flat to the head , And most farms seem to have a horse or two  about the place now

I think Scotland's too cold for sharks though fortunately

We were erecting a building on the Isle of Man some years ago, and lodged in Peel overlooking the harbour. We came out of the pub one night a bit the worse for wear and went skinny dipping.
Next morning we sat eating our breakfasts overlooking the beach, and right there where we’d been swimming last night was a huge Basking Shark.
To meet a Seal would have been bad enough in the pitch black water, but that Shark as harmless as they are, would have had me pooping myself!
