Only jokin people. It does seem from the reviews to be a light weight off road. I borrowed my brothers Mitsubishi Evoultion 8. Which had 440bhp and 4x4 drive. Terrible both on and off road. Baldrick Posted December 14, 2008 Report Share Posted December 14, 2008 The Defender is not for the faint-hearted: appalling engine noise over 60mph, piddly windscreen wipers, cramped cabin layout and dodgy seals (I have to de-ice and scrape the inside of my windscreen on occasion). However the sheer boyish satisfaction of owning a Defender outweighs these problems (assuming you're not doing a lot of motorway miles). They are proper Tonka toys, virtually unstoppable off-road and have real stature on the road. The previous owner had 'upgraded' it with a 3.0litre diesal engine out of a JCB. Top Speed 40MPH . The Defender seems perfect, i only need it for field work and nipping into the village. Zapp Posted December 14, 2008 Report Share Posted December 14, 2008 A vote here for the Daihatsu Foutrak (though I'm not saying it is the best 4x4, its more a vote of confidence) I've got one as my shooting wagon and it is great. Only cost me a bit over a grand, and it is rugged as hell, can do serious towing, and even more serious offroading. I've only got it stuck once (as Wabbitbosher can attest!), and that was my fault for grounding it massively. I have been amazed at what it will cope with other than that one incident. However for the realists, Nick's (nickberado) just bought a vaxuhall frontera SWB sport 4x4 and I have to say it would appear a perfect shooting vehicle. cheap as you like, vaxuhall so cheap to fix, reasonable on juice and as perfect a shooting platform as you could want in the removable rear roof - basically someone drives whilst the shooter can stand in the spacious rear area and shoot from a permenant platform towards the front, whilst staying warm and concealed. Someone reccomended one to me not so long ago and I turned my nose up, without looking at it, thinking it 'was not a Disco' etc - what an error of judgement on my part. I really can't think of any reason why anyone would not buy one of these as a shooting vehicle. Lets face it you are going to get it dirty, full of mud and probably hit the odd tree or two whilst driving round your permission - OK its not a Disco and it probably wont last as long but for the cash you can't go wrong. Andy W Posted December 14, 2008 Report Share Posted December 14, 2008 I have always fancied a Suzuki Jimny if they did a van version and with a 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine, cracking little motor but slow and thirsty, the new Vitara is more refined and more comfortable but I dont think it would stand much off roading. I wanted a 90/100 but I couldn't live with the fact that ones in my budget (sub £2K) were so agricultural, so I bought the disco instead. has the difflock and low range, so with mud tyres on I dont see it getting stuck any time soon. Was far more comfortable inside, more car like which made it better for taking it camping to the lakes and scotland, as well as being better for when I occasionally need to take it to work. Is it just my Disco or do all of them suffer a draft from the door rubbers ?. The whole side of my body next to the door was freezing all the way to Droitwich. charlie 1 Posted December 14, 2008 Report Share Posted December 14, 2008 rite i am sure i will get grilled as anyone who has never owned/driven one hate them. but anyhow i have a 2.0 liter diesel freelander short wheel base commercial. it is the mutts nuts. as the roof came off i sorted something out for lamping out the back and there where no back seats so i have the whole of the back for my dogs. it came with a dog gaurd on the rear window and behind the front seats. its perfect. i fitted some bfg muds so i could go offroading for shooting etc. and because of its all wheel drive instead of the 4wd like the rest its brill. i dont skid where everyone else does and as long as you are sensible regarding deep ruts (ground clearance isn't huge, But helped by larger mud tyres) it will go anywhere. i love mine and wouldn't swap it for the world. its also great as i get 35ish mpg and is build for on road as well as offroad. i give it 9 out of 10. charlie Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mungler Posted December 14, 2008 Report Share Posted December 14, 2008 At JJs today the old bill turned up looking for some naughty boys on quad bikes. Anyway, a copper turned up in a Mitsu Pajero (or something like it) and gave chase across the neighbouring field. With road tyres and a soaking wet field he got stuck upto his axles. Proper stuck. I tried an exhaust jack but no joy - the back went up but the silly front valance just got bedded in. I then got on the field and tried to give him a tow - my TD5 got stuck upto it's axles and he blew a tyre whilst spinning trying to get out. After no joy, I unhooked the tow rope and just drove out. A diesel range rover then tried and got stuck but then got out with some spade work and pushing. The copper finally got out with the Range Rover went off the field onto the adjacent hard standing pathway and pulled it sideways out (rope snapped in the process). The answer is a TD5 with the right tyres (get the half off road on road - okay you won't do any hard pulling in a wet field but you won't get stuck). jinxy72 Posted December 15, 2008 Report Share Posted December 15, 2008 (edited) everyone will always have their own opinions on this subject ... if u want a 4x4 to be a chelsea tractor then buy whatever u want as virtually any 4x4 will suit most shootng enviroments the uk has to offer .... but if u want something that will take whatever u throw at it then their is only one choice ......... landrover defender ...... its the only 4x4 with a history of heritage to back up its case that goes back for many years .
