  1. He was / is a driver for a car parts delivery company, he is 70 and was told he wasn't eligable for furlough because of his age and he accepted that at the time, Only when he returned to work did he find that his NI contribution had been credited throughout the lockdown, making him very suspicious. A little bit of digging since has revealed no age limit on furlough But if he queries it or rocks the boat in any way they will just sack him out of hand .without a second thought, so what can he do? This is the reality of the gig economy and "no contract contracts" He needs the job
  2. Today lunchtime very near the big comprehensive school I mentioned in my post two days ago. There is a parade of shops comprising a number of fast food outlets. About 70 kids all in uniform. No distancing no masks standing in big groups eating the sort of junk food that would have Jamie Oliver doing back flips. Bantering, a bit of push and shove, just kids being kids. But there are a number of issues here. Why are they allowed out of school? Who has the duty of care? There are always queues at the chip shop and the pizza shops long before all this happened. Then they go back and social distance, till its time to get the bus.
  3. Just up the road there is a massive comprehensive school which is now back. They have all the measures in place, one way corridors, classrooms are bubbles from which the kids cannot leave etc. All very proper and well run. Then at 3.30 hundreds of kids are standing cheek by jowl at the bus stops and squeezing onto the buses. All the good achieved during the day is completely wiped out. .
  4. Yes I know of somebody who has believed all the way through that his former employer was claiming for him (and others) but not passing it on. I don't know if he is aware of the fraud hotline I will tell him.
  5. What constitutes "A body of water"? it has to be defined
  6. I do wish they would give us a breakdown of how the fraud came about. Was it people claiming it while still working? or what?
  7. Oh yes the tourists are the idiots, its almost self selecting because only an idiot would want to go to a resort like that IMO. But the resort should be the adult in making and enforcing the rules.
  8. It was said to me, I don't know if its true or not, but it sounds plausable. In America they have big roadside advertising hoardings, mainly on the bigger roads, The police used to hide behind them, especially in rural areas, to catch speeding motorists, the original speed traps.. Filling signs with bullet holes made the police wary of hiding behind them
  9. It was a cultural challenge in USA when I lived there to see how many bullet holes you could get into a street sign Every street sign had some, often many
  10. It is becoming increasingly clear that the Greek Islands are not playing by the rules and allowing an "anything goes" policy in the resorts with regard to nightlife etc Now they will have to pay the price. People returning report a complete lack of distancing. No masks etc. One woman said even in the hotel at breakfast no separation between tables people just helping themselves to the buffet and leaning over you etc Everything at this stage depends on trust, No trust and the Government is right to clamp down. A surge in cases returning from these resorts tells the tale, . Good on Matt Hancock and the others they are doing their job
  11. Some pubs do and some pubs don't. At The Fountain in Mevagissy you wait at the door until they come and show you to a table and there you stay. You order drinks on your phone and they bring them to you. When you leave you go out the back door
  12. How long can an airline pilot keep his licence if he doesn't fly?
  13. The problem lies in the resorts rather than countries as a whole. In the case of zante for example. OK, its a party island, people don't go there for a quiet time but reports are that the bars and clubs were rammed with people in the same way as they would have been before the pandemic. No social distancing etc
  14. At the time of the 1966 England World cup win, international level football players were paid around double the national average wage. So about £50 a week. Graham Hill who was a top F1 driver at the same time. was earning much the same I think it was Jimmy Greaves who said that at the time he was winning honours and FA cups for Tottenham and was top goal scorer he envied somebody he knew who was a postman because he had a job for life with a pension, holiday pay and sick pay. His win bonus was £10 and that was illegal in the eyes of the FA., it was paid in readies and found in his shoes in the dressing room after the match. Hence the name boot money.
  15. I don't understand why I can buy a new Ford Mustang 5.0 in America for around the equivilent of £24,000 yet in this country its £38,000 However a Honda CRV costs exactly the same on both sides of the Atlantic
  16. My son's best mate did it for over a year and loved it. He found it a slog at first but most of your drops are regulars so it gets easier after the first couple of week when you learn your way round.
  17. Definitely a collectors piece, missing its rollers which may detract from its value. I used one to print business cards for years
  18. I wonder if they would lend us a few ships Italy is having some success with picking them up while still at sea and taking them straight back to Lybia. Thats the way forward
  19. Lead pellets leave residues / streaks in the barrels too and requires cleaning. A friend of mine (member at our club) was an international air rifle shot and he used to be seen swabbing out his barrel with Hoppes on a regular basis, Copper could be worse
  20. No, i never would have thought that, how can you say such a thing???? Actually, more often than not, I don't think they actually know what the subtle fine details of the rules are. They get trained on the broad principles but a lot of their "howlers" show their knowledge is sketchy.
  21. I believe its not illegal in the criminal sense, its just against their Terms and Conditions Ordinary powder is not actually an explosive, which is why we can buy it without an explosives licence
  22. Its not entirely clear whether there ever was a clown
  23. My OH's got a 1.4 Jazz, it 12 years old now and it regularly does 700 to 800 miles in a week shuttling back and forward between London and Cornwall at the moment The secret for a good engine life really is in the oil. You must only use fully synthetic oil and the engine will last for ever. Budget oil is false economy but you have to trust your garage is using decent oil because a lot don't. Even the best garages buy cheap oil
  24. You see thats the difference where you live to where I live. I know, or know of, eleven people who have died from it. My OH's cousin, late 50s a few health issues but not serious two former customers of mine, both elderly. One allegedly caught it at a hospital visit in the very early days. three former work colleagues, all retired (from the company retirees website) two members of a rifle club I belong to a mate from way back who was in a care home recovering from a stroke a neighbour in the next road a friend of a friend who collapsed and died at home before the ambulance arrived. Had mild symptoms for a few days before. You can see why I would take things a lot more seriously here in London than if I was in North Wales.
  25. Everything about Bisley is getting dearer. I'm paying £30 an hour to shoot on the rifle range (electronic targets) and its a bit solitary just sitting there on your own. its lockdown But compare the cost to playing golf. Membership in the thousands and £70 plus for a game
