Mungler
I was thinking what about something more "on topic" [shooting and conservation related]. As shooters and hunters we often get labelled and put in a negative light; indeed, the conservation side of shooting gets ignored by the antis because it suits them to do so. Now then, this a pigeon shooting forum and whilst I couldn't condone a gift to the RSPB because of their militant view that no bird should ever be shot (not even a Magpie let alone a Pigeon), so what about a gift to something like the Songbird Trust. It's a small national charity that wants to protect songbirds and I think a decent donation from some pigeon shooters would make a difference and be good PR. Failing that something to support Red Squirrels. It was just a thought.... Edited January 31, 2011 by Mungler

Mungler
I just thought it would be an interesting proposition for a pigeon shooting forum full of gun totting animal killers (apparently) to be supporting a wildlife based charity. Ironic and ripe for some good shooting PR. Discuss....

Mr Potter
Yep, small and local is likely to cause upset. It has to be national to keep toys in prams etc. Mungler, There are already plenty of toys on the floor already and I suspect there will be tons more before the big day!! shaun4860
Red squirrels sounds ok, they would probably appreciate the money more, not that im saying others wouldnt but just after we did the GOSH last year another charity shoot handed over £100k to the same charity. Red squirrels are national, so that covers all the bases.... Shaun
Paddy Galore!
I disagree I couldn't give a toss about red squirrels, if they weren't endangered and were legally fair game then i'd be shooting them.
ME
There are a lot of votes for cancer charities. The Orchid Cancer Trust ticks all the boxes in my opinion : * National Charity * Cancer Charity * Not a large wasteful charity * Deals with mens health issues (as the majority of PW members are men) I have met the founder of the charity and I am sure if we supported this charity then it would create great PR for the forum and Orchid. I am also sure that unlike GOSH last year that we would get banners, and general support tying the two organisations together. >SUPPORT< FACTS AND STATS HERE Edited February 1, 2011 by ME
Catamong
Yes, got to agree 100% with ME on this one, that would be a great Charity to support, I'm all in favour of a Cancer Charity that targets Men, it's so important to spread the word and make men aware of possible symptoms that, if tackled early enough, can be a life saver. I speak from personal experience on this one. Cat.

Canis
I personally would try to avoid giving to one the great monolithic corportate entities that hapen to call themselves "charities". I think that it would be useful to pick a charity where the couple of thousand may be of real use. That said it may be hard to find a national charity that meets this criteria A Country pursuits/wildlife support charity would get my support if we could find one suitable. HannahOrchid
Dear all, I have directed to this forum by ME who has very kindly recommended Orchid as the charity he believes would benefit from your support this year. Just a little bit about us so you know who we are and what we do; Orchid was set up in 1996 by Colin Osborne a testicular cancer survivor and Professor Tim Oliver, the doctor who helped save his life. We are the only UK registered charity to focus on all three male specific cancers; testicular, prostate and penile. We offer support and information to people affected by or interested in male cancer through a dedicated medical research programme, education and awareness campaigns and a range of support services. Our key achievements in the fight against male cancer are - The launch of the 'Orchid Tissue Bank'. The biggest collection of penile cancer tissues in Europe. - Developing a new treatment for prostate cancer involving the use of intermittent chemotherapy. - In 2011 employing a male cancer specialist nurse to support the many men who contact us for advice and support. - New highly successful treatments for men with aggressive testicular cancers. - Creating the awareness dvd 'Know your Balls Check 'Em Out' which is shown to thousands of teenage boys every year. Orchid is a small charity with very low overheads. Because of our link with St Barts hospital we do not pay any rent and only have a small staffing team. This is key to our pivotal work as your money is put straight in to funding research and awareness in to these terrible diseases. As a small charity we thoroughly appreciate the support of groups such as yourselves and would love to work with you during your North versus South Pigeon Shoot. If you would like any more information about Orchid and the Work we do please do not hesitate to contact us at events@orchid-cancer.org.uk or 0203 4657 293. Mr Potter
ME came up trumps with the organisation of last years N v S Charity Shoot. He's gone and done it again, assuming we get a vote, my mind is made up. Mens cancer charities get only a fraction of the support that womens do and here is a chance to redress the balance.
