Stepping on someone's toes

Here's the situation,

Having a pint in the local i was asked by someone if i could shoot some pigeons as they had loads on there and they had asked other people but i was told they didnt bother showing. I didnt need to be asked twice and made it clear that i would more than love to. So next available time i was the phone had a chat with the land owner sorted out were to go and were not to go, up there, set up my hide deeks and pop off a few pigeons, not too many but none the less i was there on the field. I packed up and on the way to the farm catch a chat with the farmer, give him my thanks and appreciation and the offer was there again from him,,

"pop up any time just give me a ring before you come" :good:

So next available time i ring up the farmer to ask if i can shoot more pigeons, the answer was "no problem get on them" and was told the wheat had been cut so i went on the stubble the other day, had a really good day shot plenty could of had more but thats another story, but the thing was i was there on the field again, had such a good day i went the next day aswell but not so good, name of the game.

Now i know someone else shoots on there for Deer and fox, (well they have permission anyway)

The thing is now the chaps that have permision but go only when its a blue moon and its got to be a sunday, are not too happy because they think i'm after there bit.

My oppinion is if they aint going to go and do what the farmer wants to, them why moan when someone else is asked, if they went then i would not have been approached in the first place would i.

MY opinion is i am doing nothing wrong in accepting the offer, is it just me, bearing in mind i only intend shooting pigeons. Now if i was asked to shoot fox's then i would ask myself why am i being asked, my answer would be because no one else is doing the job,simple's..

The question is how many of you would have taken the offer ???

As above. Entirely up to the farmer how many shooters he allows on his land after pigeon. Sometimes having a few shooters on the ground can keep the birds moving about & benefit all.

At other times it is annoying when you turn up & someone has beat you to it... but unless these other guys have paid for exclusive rights, they will just have to like it or lump it like the rest of us do.

I think that the vast majority would do what you have done. If the farmer is being plagued by pigeon he wants somebody there when the pigeon are; not someone who turns up once in a blue moon when the mood takes them. I would take evey opportunity to get amongst his pigeons and buy him a pint when you see him. Could be the others who have permission; will get dropped as a result of their half hearted efforts. Enjoy what you have got & make sure your friendly landowner knows you are grateful.

The comments are really what I expect. Its the fact that the other armchair shooters are having a good old moan,i cant believe they have the b@%& or sense to understand why someone else has been asked. The way they are going I hope I end up with it,they dont deserve it.

It's the farmer's choice who shoots there so they can get stuffed. Good on you!

Agree its the farmers, land so he alone says who can and can not shoot, if I was in the same position I would take it, could be the others are afraid of loosing their permission as you are being seen to be doing the job. If they can't be bothered or don't have a good reason for not clearing the land perhaps they deserve to loose their permission. All the farmer wants if to be free of pests and make money.

Dont be daft - the farmers the man - ask if you can shoot fox and deer - they probably dont keep them under control either !

I wouldnt do that. But ! ! ! I would shoot fox and deer if asked, I think under the circumstances I will stick to the pigeons. The farmer is well aware I would shoot the fox.s and deer, I would rather wait to be asked, like the rest of my permissions,of which I am lucky to have got from word of mouth only.

The time for talking has passed....

It's got to be 'Balboa' time

It is very possble it may end up getting verbal in one of my locals.

Give it a few months and ask him if they are still shooting there, then mention foxes, leave the deer for him to mention

Some people just like collecting permissions for some reason but never go and shoot them. I manage deer for Natural England, mainly Fallow and they like to roam abit depending on seasonal pantry. The deer like helping themselves to private garden stocks, usually entering through bordering farmland, when you try and gain permission the farmer says he already has a chap that sorts the deer. Unfortunatley the' chap that sorts the deer' is only interested when there is a herd of 20 not so far from the roadside or a gold medal buck strutting about. Local householders wonder why I can't control their deer problem.
