Marc Z
so last evening I was walking the dog along the footpath near my house, just starting to get dark, and I heard the keeper going around the top of the hill in his kubota, maybe 400 yards away, and hear the rifle crack. No big deal, I'm used to that, and carry on. Then I see some deer running between us in the open field. At this point, I can see the kubota, and behind me in a line between the keeper, deer, and I is the hamlet where I live, maybe 200 yards away. Then crack, the rifle goes. But this time accompanied by a loud snatch/whizz what seemed like yards from my head. Now I've never been shot at before, but would imagine it sounds like what I experienced. Not sure what I want to achieve by saying all this, it just left me a little shaken and wanted to tell someone! Bearing in mind I was very much on a public footpath. I haven't met the keeper yet, so there's no way of me raising my concerns without coming across as being on the offensive. What should I do? Or can someone relieve me that I didn't nearly get shot? Blunderbust
If it was a High vellocety round you would hear the crack as the round passed you then the dull thump of the rifle going off.
fruity
A ricochet maybe
Marc Z
I would hope if anything a ricochet, but being directly in line of rifle and deer... must have been a bad shot to have missed anyway.
barrelsniffer
Unless it was a ricochet ? Then you would hear the whizz you can also hear the whizz if shot from far dist as bullet slows down in speed this is from experience
sitsinhedges
Sounds like you need to have a word with the chap and take it from there.
Marc Z
it did have the ricochet whizz, but it definitely went passed me and close enough for me to duck as a reflex! just concerns me like I say he was basically aiming in the direction of houses, albeit several hundred yards of undulating countryside away, and over the footpath. I don't really want to get in the shoots bad books though as I'm fairly new here and wanted to try for some permissions!

Marc Z
you should call it crump, quicker to say so uses less of the taxpayers money.
Dirty Harry
Go and see the keeper. Be polite and explain your concerns.
plank06
Iv stood in a rifle range bunker where the bullets come over your head then you patch the target. It's quite a loud crack as they come 5 feet above you!

Catweazle
A round coming over your head sounds like a Christmas cracker, if that's what you heard then you need to tell the keeper.

bicykillgaz
Go armed with a permission slip and tell him you'll say no more about it if he signs! Seriously though just have a polite word as next time it could hit someone. Also what sort of time was it? Evening to me means 5-8pm when it's dark aren't there rules about that? Kes
I would ask the keeper if you can help out first and then explain your experience, asking first if he has a problem with poachers - dont mention it might have been him and act a bit 'daft'. That way he wont feel targeted directly but will recognise the dangerous situation, If he cuts up about it - you know you have lost nothing and would be unlikely ever to get permission on the land. M.I.A
Somewhat concerning! Rifle rounds passing anywhere within 10+ yards of you will sound asthough they only missed you by mm! Very scary! I would be inclined to have a word with the keeper and explain what happened. Edited January 20, 2013 by M.I.A
artschool
Bizarre :o not really. if he goes to tell them off, no matter how polite he is, I would say he stands no chance of gaining a permission.
chrispti
The crack sound you hear on a range/in the butts, is the sound or the round passing through the target. A round passing through the air makes a "zip" sound. A tumbling round makes a "wizz" or a "vvvv" sound.

I agree, have a word with him, it might have just been a one-off, but if it happens again someone could be hurt or worse
scolopax
Have a word, and blackmail him into giving you unlimited shooting on his ground!
Vince Green
I have been shot at and it always sounds like it just missed you but your mate 50 yds away will equally swear it just missed him.
