They really must like this spring barley.

There are loads of disadvantages of being self-employed. There is no pay if you don't go to work, or if you are on holiday or if you are ill being just three but there are lots more. There are less advantages but there is an important one which is that time off can be taken to go pigeon shooting if conditions are right.

My second consecutive afternoon shooting did not appear to start well. There wasn't a single bird on the spring barley drillings when I turned up to shoot at 1pm. There was a good wind though and when a few birds began to appear from a very distant wood things changed somewhat. I rushed around the headland and set up at the top of a sloping field and from that position I could see birds coming from possibly 1km away, certainly as far as my naked eye could see them. The initial pattern of decoys was all wrong and I had to alter it twice to get birds to come into the pattern as I wanted.

From 1:30 to 5:00 there were always birds in the air and I added to the bag with some half decent shots and failed miserably to add to the bag with some silly misses. The decoy pattern towards the end of my session must have looked impressive with over 100 birds in it which seemed to draw birds from all parts of the compass.

I picked a total of 133 pigeons for just less than a 'slab' of cartridges. Those hot shots out there amongst PW members would have had more I do not doubt but none would have enjoyed the afternoon more than I did.

Zombie pigeons? How are the ones you've added standing upright, I can't see any support. Nice bag for a few hours work.

I had some thin steel rods cut to about 300mm. They are just pushed through the body into the head and there is enought left over to angle the bird as desired.

To those who are rude/complimentary about my cap, I had three made ten years ago and they have proved to be an excellent investment. They are pure wool, 100% waterproof and they give my face some protection in the hide as I never wear a face mask (some have said that I should to hide my ugly face).
