Dole Scum or Disabled Scrounger (according to some here)

Forced into medical retirement 12 years ago and rapidly dropping to bits. Full time sole carer for my autistic son and spent the last 3-1/2 years fighting social services and the NHS trust to try and get any sort of help for him for when I'm no longer here.

Being not only in your condition, but also your position! Nobody can.call you a Scrounger

I brought up My Son on my own also and Found out than not only did he have Autism, but Heart disease, Scoliosis, Sprengels deformity and Skeletal abnormalities!

I was working as a Bus Driver before hand and had a varied work history up until then. I asked the company for a little understanding and the possibility of flexy hours! They refused point blanc, so I left!

I looked Chris for the best part of 17 years now. He turns 18 in October  After trying to get back into a Bus Driving roll with half a dozen different companies and failing, I decided to take my FLT course and found a Warehouse Job. Pay is NAFF but it's work.

I am still looking for a PCV job if I can get one as I loved the job.

Fortunately for me, I am not in bad health! "That I know of anyway" and Chris is becoming more independant! I can't see Chris will EVER leave home, But I don't mind really!

Trying to get HELP wity Autism is a mine field and lottery. I got to know a LOT of parents of Autistic Children who were diagnosed early and statemented. They got DLA for their Children. With Chris being diagnosed late, He couldn't be statemented and.was NOT entitled to DLA

Thats right! Heart Disease "bicuspid aeortic valve syndrome"

Autism

Sprengels deformity

Not entitled to DLA?

Yet all the other parents, because the kids were statemented GOT DLA for their kids!

It's bloomin mad

I hope you manage to get some sort of care sorted for your Child. The fact small changes can trigger mood pattern changes, then loosing YOU will have a HUGE impact!

ATVB :good:

Similar story, not diagnosed until 15, too late for a statement (LEA basically not interested as it would mean having to actually do something to help). His mum left 7 months later and now has almost no contact with him or his older brother. No help from Social Services, didn't even tell us about the Transistions Team (between child and adult social services where there's a gap) for 16-18yr olds, only found out by accident when he was 17-1/2 so he only had 6 half hour appointments, luckily the chap we saw was very good and gave us a better insight into some of his behaviour.

After turning 18 no help at all, nothing. Took almost 4 years and a formal complaint to get him moved to a different support team and then 8 months and monthly phone calls/complaints for his new care coordinator to actually turn up. Now 10 months later he may get one half day a week learning to cook which (not surprisingly) we have to pay for.

He's 23 today and without me he has no support system, trying to change things (as I'm sure you know!) with Autistic Spectrum Disorders is painfully slow and difficult and I'm worried I won't be able to get enough done before my own disabilities prevent me caring for him properly, I've been waiting for a care assessment for my needs for 5 years, they came out twice last September and haven't been back to finish it, his care coordinator has now been asked to look at it but only as far as my needs affect his!.

As for DLA I'd certainly have someone from Welfare Rights or the CAB look at that and apply again (now PIP not DLA) as it's not what he has but how it affects his life that it's based on.

Best of luck to both of you :)

Yes! Chris has been on the courses to try and teach him independance etc. Last one cost me £50 for two days. Your not allowed HELP but by god you have to pay to seek help off your own back.

He was statemented so late he had to stick out in mainstream school and take his chances with GCSE examinations instead of being placed in the ARC and given more one on one based help. Having said that he has done quite well and is NOW in 6th form trying to improve his grades, so hats off to him!

He is trying to get on but has very unrealistic expectations. With his Heart problems, he can not take any physicaly challanging employment. He wanted to do so many different things. Animal care "mainly dogs" is the one he really wanted. If I had enough money I would have got a small holding and opened a boarding kennel to help him get what he wanted and make a living at the same time!

His behaviour problems are mixed! Inward aggression. Self harming etc when people take the urine out of him. And when he is left alone he can become destructful. He got hold of a scalple once and totally ruined the furniture in his room. When confronted about it he didn't believe HE had done it. He genuinely thought someone ELSE had damaged it.

It's a long arduous road that NEEDS to be trodden! They can't just switch it off when they feel like it

There are Good days and BAD days. Then.there are some FANTASTIC days! Only twice have I had really low days.

I actually feel great knowing I can continue to help him, even through adulthood! I never get a Fathers day card nor Christmas presents nor Birthday wishes etc. I won't force him to either! I just think He is reward enough for all My hard work :D

I love him to Bits

It's what proper dads do

No cards or presents here either but as you say, it's more than enough just to know he loves me (even if he can't express it). Been there with the destructive behaviour when his mum left, luckily managed to get most of it sorted and then when I got him into shooting he had something he enjoyed doing and it makes a big difference for him.

We moved house in January to an over 55s bungalow and a friend who hadn't seen him for a while remarked he seems happier than when we lived next to the chavs, druggies and barking dogs!.
