955i
Had a mate round tonight cos his lad plays with my son. He was telling me he went on a shoot and a bird went over the guns with a gammy leg. He mentioned it to the other beaters and was told that a jacky had taken it by the back end and when they got it off him had thrown it up 'so the guns get to have a go' He mentioned it as it was flying funny and hit electric cabling before a gun managed to hit it. This guy is a shooter through and through and not a liar so I believe what he says. This is a £1500+ shoot and I think this is despicable behaviour. The guns (29) only shot 38 through the day with very easy misses, so what would have become of this bird if the inept hadn't managed to hit it! He has point blank refused to have anything to do with this shoot again. EDIT - spelling Edited November 16, 2013 by 955i

955i
eh? Someone didn't make a clean kill on a bird so it hit a cable? No, a dog had the bird on the ground so they took it off it and threw it in the air to make it fly over the guns. what exactly is the problem? It should have been hit on the head, not thrown up for the 'guns' to have a go!! They had 29 guns? I will double check on the amount of guns if that makes the behaviour any better
Nikk
sounds a bit weird...probably to give them half a chance at hitting something. I suppose half the problem is that there are people who just shoot for shootings sake. I've been on shoots where people weren't even interested in a brace, turned up, killed some stuff and went home. it's not my cup of tea.
955i
Well apparently beaters got chuff all at the end of the day to top it all. Can't remember the details of where it was, but in Notts/Derbyshire area
Nikk
I hve been somewhere where the birds were dumped on the floor at the end of the day, they asked who wanted some and no one did so I said I'd have as many as possible. We don't have to do a Hail Mary after each shot but it doesn't hurt to have some respect for the quarry.

JBS
they have to much money, and no respect for the birds. Who? the beaters? Surely the gun that shot the bird was doing what anyone would do in the line and finish a wounded bird? The bad form is from the beaters here not the guns. What happened shouldn't be a reflection of the shoot itself but it's certainly an indication of the character of the chav who did the tossing after retrieving the injured bird from the jaws of a dog. scotslad
Sort of struggling to see the point in this thread, as others have said absolutely nothinhg to do with the guns if a beaters dog pegs 1, any gun would have shot at a bird that has a leg visibly hanging and not flying well (if safe) so really can't see how the guns are at fualt. And even the best guns/teams have bad days Must admit i have also took birds (almost exclusively duck) out of my dog's mouth and after carefully examining it released it back onto the water, esp early season on more commercial shoots some ducks can be quite tired as well as pricked. If any doubt or or slight damage it gets PTS
CharlieT
Pheasant shooters, says it all really Rubbish. Read it again, it was the beaters not the guns. Another anti pheasant shooting thread.
Cranfield
Strange story. A beater throws a pegged bird up in the air, rather than despatching it and 29 guns paying £1500 each per season, only shoot 38 birds a Shoot. I bet the Keeper has nightmares. Whitebridges
So a Jack Russell caught a pheasant hence the birds gammy leg?

Many who actually go game shooting would suggest slightly unbelievable. As said if it happened then it's the beater at fault but no proper game shoot has anywhere near that number of guns out

Dekers
I'm no expert and only regularly attend 2 shoots, both very private, and probably out around 20 times in a season, but I have never been to a shoot that I can remember that even had guns in double figures! £1500, 29 Guns and 38 birds! 955i
Sorry, I was mistaken, spoken to my neighbour again and it was 19 guns not 29, I believe they split the drives. Rest all true as far as I can tell, he was well hacked off when he first told me about it. He stated that most of those he saw couldn't hit a bird unless it was in front of the barrels. Not knocking pheasant shoots, like a bit of driven game, but this sounds particularly shambolic. Edited November 17, 2013 by 955i
Blackpowder
19 Guns so it must have been beat one stand one with some extra unpaid beaters in the line. 19 is a larger than usual Gun team if they were all standing.
