bigbird
Driving back from school a female blackbird flew out from the hedge under my car, heard a thud against my pickup undercarriage and that was her done for. Felt awful, nearly cried! Happy to shoot ( or attempt to!) pheasants, crows, pigeons but this really upset me :( Still, I would've felt worse if it were Spring I suppose :(
Davyo
Nowt you can do bud, especially if the roads busy.Couple of years ago had a woman nearly hit me head on and pushed me onto the verge. She stopped and apologised, and said she swerved to miss a hedgehog. andypaint
They do make a blooming mess in the garden though digging up all the wood chippings and kicking soil all over the place. They eat all me strawberrys and other fruits. I wouldn't feel to bad there's times when I'd put them on the licence the mess they make. welsh1
Sometimes it can't be helped,we set off for Ben Nevis last year only got a mile down the road and a badger ran out in front of the navara, there was nothing i could do to avoid it and i heard a thud as it was struck by my diff.We stopped and got out to see if it was still alive,it drew a breath as i approached it and was dead,I know a lot of us don't like them but they are a beautiful creature,i put it under a hedge off the road at least even in dying it will help some other creatures live. drut
**** happens and causes unfortunate outcomes(clearly an inadequate description) but lack of intent to cause harm should hopefully cleanse your conscience.:at least i hope so as it could happen to any one of us. four-wheel-drive
I have seen quite a few blackbirds lately and we have loads of sparrows I hate it when something darts out in front of my car and it gets killed when you shoot something you have done it for a reason but when I run over something it always makes me feel bad. peck
i was driving along a back road with high banks either side, came upon a lamb that had fallen through the hedge onto the road, stopped and put it back through the hedge to its mum, carried on my journey, came around a slight bend in the road and 2 male blackbirds came from nowhere they were fighting, before i knew it i had collided with them both, killed them stone dead. went from happy to have saved a lamb to sad after hitting the birds. norfolk dumpling
Killed a barn owl a few years back - couldn't avoid it as crows were after it's prey and caused it to swerve into my path, on a bend, oncoming traffic narrow road. That really upset me and still does today writing this. Funny how we are described a heartless killers!
figgy
I'm always worried about the damage animals cause to the front of the car when you hit them. Make a right mess. Figgy
Zapp
I hit a little owl a couple of years back. Nothing I could do, it took off from a tree by the side of the road and I hit it less than half a second later. I never feel good about running anything over, but that made me feel especially bad. grrclark
A couple of years back I was driving along a narrow hedge lined lane when a flock of sparrows or similar flew out from the hedge en mass, I fully expected to clobber a few of them, but ultimately it was just one poor wee birdy that suffered a terrible fate, it managed to avoid the car but didn't miss the aerial sticking up from the middle of the roof. All I heard was a twang and looked in my rear view mirror to see the poor wee thing spiralling to the ground :(

Cranfield
Survival of the fittest, that blackbird was doomed to die sometime soon. Thats how I justify these accidents to myself.
fella
Saw 3 Canadas that had been run over earlier this year in a bit of a sunspot near to where I live. I'll happily drive 9 hours to orkney to shoot the black and white villains, but seeing them run over upset me. Mostly because I couldn't find who was responsible. Berettacocker
Last spring, a pair of red-legged partridges ran across a narrow lane, and sorry to say I flattened one ( I mean like a pancake )! Looked in mirror, and the other bird was standing next to it. Felt guilty killing one of the pair, but carried on my way. On my way home a couple of hours later, it was still standing there! Pulled up and got out of truck, and bird was still reluctant to leave its mate! Felt sick as a pig then! :(
islandgun
I remember seeing a nice fluffy squirrel engrossed at the side of the road, mindful of the queue of people at a standstill on the other side of the road, I slowed right down to 10mph which was just the right speed to squash said squirrel when it decided to commit suicide under my slowly moving wheel, the look of horror on the face of the lady closest confirmed that it was not a pretty sight,

I should add that if i had maintained the 30mph speed, the squirrel would have remained alive long enough to be shot at a later date
