Dissertation Final Survey - Shotgun Cartridge Colour Coding

Has the OP fallen down a hole? If I were doing a survey like this and there is an audience to ask questions from, I would be on here every day to refine the answers down to something that means something and not just a load of vague statistics. The sensible answer to the question should calibers be colour coded then the answer should be a simple YES but this poses the next question as to why different manufacturers use different colours. Is it that they want their brand to be green or red or sky blue pink with polka dots or is that the green ones are a pound cheaper per thousand. There is so much more dynamic information to be gleaned from this survey than a simple set of for and against.

The OP is collecting data for a undergrad dissertation which will be bound by time constrains. While you have raised some valid points which the OP can maybe address as areas of further research, the OP may not have the time and nor is required to gather and analyse that amount of primary research.

Done, nothing wrong with asking for a short survey to be completed by the shooting community. Good luck with it.

No matter what your say, how right your are, or whatever point you make, there will always be toss pots on here that have nothing better to do than argue, and if they can't do that, then resort to correcting grammar and /or spelling. Ignore it and good luck with the degree.

Hi All,

Firstly thank you so much for your support and providing me with your opinions on this subject.

An introduction to myself As requested by one individual... Correct, I'm 21, female and a very keen shot. Shooting is a passion of mine and I work hard to train my working spainel. I am studying my final year of a business degree and wanted to include my passion for shooting within my dissertation. I shoot a 12 bore only so mixing cartridges is something that isn't as big an issue for me, but I wanted to seek opinions of others.

I hope this provides some more background on me and I thank you all for helping me achieve.

Please feel free to share / repost this survey on your social media pages, the broader the opinions I can get the better. I also plan to visit some grounds and shoots so I may see some of you around hopefully!!

Happy new year and best wishes .

Tiff

Ignore them Tiff they would all run a mile if you made a move on them and they weren't safely sitting at home behind a computer that or they would all have heart attacks from the excitement. LOL

Just thank you all for your support!

I've just come in from a days picking up with my pup, so sorry for my late reply to my post. Anyone else been out shooting / working today ? Now it's snowing!!

HDAV, why should I be bald and 40 ?! Sorry!!!

Good luck in your degree. It is good that you are combining something that you are interested in with and have some knowledge of with the required research. I bet that there aren't many doing this sort of thing. once again good luck to you.

Some of you need to take the internet less seriously, it's not RL, you understand that don't you? In the time that you defended someone that couldn't even be bothered to introduce themselves and has a total of two posts, one of which was a correction I've molested your turkey, stole your presents and pee'd in your Cava.

But that didn't really happen did it? 😄😄

I completed it straight away but I will take bets on when 'tiffl' next posts on PW. I reckon they won't even come back to say thanks.

BTW, pointing out the fact that it is christmas and 'they might be female? Just LOL!

Damn......... I knew I should have taken that bet! Lol Edited by Rst1990

I get through thousands of both 20 and 12 bore shells every year and make a conscious effort never to have the two together either in storage or pockets, vehicles etc as I am aware of what can happen, never heard of or considered colour coding before but can't see how it can be a bad thing, anything that promotes safety gets a thumbs up with me.

As I've been out for 50 sporting with the son in laws today I had a look at other calibers when I was in the gunroom this evening. a 410 will lodge in the choke area of a 28 bore. The cartridge was a 3" and some of the case was hanging out of the end of the barrel but a 410 or fourlong might just hold unseen. A 28 will sit just in front of the chamber of a 20 (Nasty big bang) I dont have a 16 so couldn't check that one out. And I dont have a 10 so I dont know if a 12 would sit in front of that chamber and we all know about 20/12 issue. perhaps others might be able to check out the potential problems. I never mix different sizes at all so have never had an issue. I've seen a couple of bursts with mud and snow in the end of a barrel and I had a blocked barrel when I slipped and fell own a bank. The gun wasn't loaded but I could have easily put one in resulting in a problem if I had been careless or dismissive. I had a bit of a job finding a straight stick to rod it out with.

I know that this isn't what the original post was about but it shows another angle of getting a burst cause by an obstruction.

I use both a 12 and a 20at different times as the mood/weather takes me and never give ammo a second thought. I have 2 ammo boxes and one cartridge bag so if I'm changing gauge I tip the spares into ammo box, get the next lot out, do a quick visual check and have never had a problem. I find it rather worrying that guns have the odd wrong round in their bag/pocket/or worse gun. Visually they are different and they feel different.

I do not see colour as the main problem, you naturally put hand into pocket or bag and pull out two cartridges and insert them, if one then disappears it is un natural to go back for another cartridge

Unless you are loading like many do with one cartridge from say the left pocket and another or simular cartridge from the right pocket, then seeing a empty chamber and without thinking reloading that one again

Colour helps identify 20 gauge, but 28 gauge will also go into a 20 gauge the same way

Maybe just safer to always load both from the same pocket and just use the same cartridges for the shoot and just use choke to control range

Just my observations but hope it helps raise another area for consideration

That's why I only own a 12 bore, 28 bore and 410 as the wrong cartridge will either not go in the chamber or simply fall straight through the barrel and out the end. I only recently purchased my first 410 and before I agreed to buy it, I got the dealer to demonstrate that the 410 cartridge would fall straight through the barrels of a 28 bore.
