It is standard practice for medics to presume we are all lying, as most people do edit what they actually drink when speaking to the doctor, so if you are telling the truth that doesn't help......... Just had to go see my new gp for a letter for the firearms licensing team for my new application for a sgc, to be honest I don't drink, maybe a bottle of wine with the wife once a fortnight or so..... I work most friday and saturdays so don't socially drink with mates etc.....so I don't think that will cause any issues

As a matter of interest ,intemperate behavior,as in :drinking excessively, drug use or the like is obviously and quite rightly a good reason to revoke,or refuse to grant/renew SGC or FAC.

However the HO guidelines on this are set at 30 units of alcohol weekly.

So,2 pints of 'ordinary ' strength beer at roughly 2.3 units each a night puts you over this limit

What is the difference between someone owning a car or a firearm that drinks over the limit as long as they don't drive or handle a firearm when under the influence. Both are capable of killing a firearm and a car, they don't revoke someone's driving licence because they drink over the limit only if they are caught. But they revokes a precision firearms certified even if they have not handled a firearm while drunk. :hmm:

Ordnance has a very valid point, without taking over this thread with my woes, I was revoked last year due to a malicious allegation from a former employer that I had mental health issues, I paid my gp for a report that outlined my health and pointed out I had no mental health issues.......they still revoked me....... Sacs who I was a member of were worse than useless...... I joined basc...... I reapplied for a sgc as I have been told they shouldn't have revoked me...... Basc have said I should have appealled at the time and they would have given advice and guidance...... Anyway I have moved house and my application has been switched between forces, the feo has been out, he said he can't see any issues and felt I shouldn't have been revoked, they wanted another doctors letter, so another doctors report from a different gp (I have moved) saying the same as the last....... Now waiting for a final decision and my sgc back......... Beware of who knows you have a sgc especially if you work in the public sector as it was used against me in a vindictive way last year

They didn't revoke my driving licence and the car is easier to use in a street to kill/injure

I told my new doctor the other day when asked what I drank, 3 or 4 beers a night. I saw on her screen she recorded me as- heavy drinker. I think I know what lies ahead and may cut out the school night boozing for any future tests.

I would seriously have a word with your doctor ,and try and make up some reason why you have 'now stopped drinking'

Otherwise ,come renewal time ,you may have a problem.

Good luck.

Blimey that's close then

1.5 pints of Marstons Pedi most nights and maybe 2 If I'm on a bender Oh !and 1 on a Sunday. That's just silly. Its a good job they don't go on previous It used to be 180 units a week :whistling:

Reading this makes me wonder how often, and why some of you see your Dr, as my Dr has no idea what i look like or if i even exist. I registered when i moved into the village and have not been there since and that was over 20 years ago.

I used to think the same until my heart decided to stop.

However, don't feel too left out, you'll soon have to start seeing him when your past 180 units of alcohol a week catches up with your liver function.

Same here ,except for when I was a sprog, the only time I ever saw a doctor is when I register at a new surgery, and this was one of those occasions, twice in 20 years !

Obviously when you register they ask some questions about your health ,lifestyle,do you drink/smoke ect.

Me being honest/naive ...

By the way, unless you are registered with a GP its impossible to obtain a SGC/FAC as the medical checks cannot be carried out, makes sense I suppose ,but food for thought for those who dont have one and are thinking of applying.

From the spoken word to the written word.

Paid a visit to my Gp regarding pain management and changed medication as it was playing havoc with my digestive system, he then wanted me to go and have a fasting blood test for cholesterol levels, no previous history,Any other time it would be no problem but i was still rough with the old meds, so i said can i leave it for a couple of weeks until i felt better, he said yes that will be ok. He then typed out on his computer in capitals and in red PATIENT REFUSED BLOOD TEST I was not happy and told him so and he changed it.

I changed my GP after that.

this is true.....

i know a few Doctors and have often questioned them on this. (in a non medic situation, more of a chat over morning tea.)

yep they count everyone as lying and virtually double the figures you state to them...

I have a nephew who is a doctor...... So it was a bit more than an educated guess.

I understand why they do it as we all know what's bad for us and its human nature to play down our bad habits, however I am brutally honest and I am assuming most of us here are (it goes with following rules like the restrictions on our sgcs/facs).

But now know how we must explain things to the gp. I never drink, have never smoked, I live on an all natural diet, and exercise everyday...... They will then write light to moderate drinker, ex smoker, does a bit of exercise who eats a balanced diet (occasional takeaway) and is generally ok........ Which is the truth anyway

I always thought 21 units for males was the recommended maximum intake?

My son as a toddler was holding a desk drawer and fell backwards exposing the doctors 'dirty little secret', a half bottle of Bells!

Teetotal meself these days!!

Start with a formal written complaint to your doctor's surgery. Keep it polite, but if they have written a report that is manifestly wrong and based on not seeing you for 18 months then that's pretty shambolic.

The police / firearms licensing have no choice but to act on the 'professional' reports / information submitted to them.

To echo what Charlie T says Dougy enjoy it while it last mate up till the age of 39 my Dr thought I had been working in Saudi or emigrated as they never saw me then due to a serious health scare I was a frequent visitor for nearly a year :sad1: .

It's nice that the real he-men of PW deign to regale us with their manly stories of never needing to go to the doctor.

It's so heartening to know that we can be preached at by our betters. Thank you, thank you so much.

I hope that one day when you are seriously ill and need a doctor's help you too will benefit from such wise guidance.
