Film & TV extras

My mate did it on the follow up to one of those greek spartany type films (not 300). You spend about 10 hours standing about waiting to film a 10 minute scene.

Saying that, I THINK it pays between £100-150 a day. Good money for essentially doing nothing if you can get it.

Another gent I worked with was an extra on the Russell Crowe - Robin Hood film. He was a "skilled extra" as he had to ride his horse up that beach scene. HE SAYS he got about £300 a day AND £150 a day FOR HIS HORSE!

Bloody good money if you can pick up roles like that.

I always thought about looking into doing this,I'm an amputee and thought there might be a need for extras without extras

That's an interesting concept actually!

On a side note, I know lots of people who appear to have had a full frontal lobotomy, they'd fit in the zombie thing like a glove.

Was a film extra on Full Metal Jacket,Was one of the Parris Island recruits also did the combat scenes. In all was on it from start to finish about a years work.Got my FAA card (film actors association)cost ten pound, and then signed up with Central Casting, which cost me nothing to get on there books.Did one more film after(Rosie and Sammy get laid) with buster blood vessel and Roland Gift of Fine young cannibals.Had to phone in Central Casting every day to see if they had any work gave up after six months as nothing else came up. Stay clear of agencys that charge to get you on there books.Agencys make money out of you every time you land a roll.Good Luck

I have not worked as a extra but have worked on a few tv shows on outside film jobs as safety and unless you are the star then you have to stand around in freezing conditions most of the time (if in the uk). saying that if the director wants lunch then its lunch and its allways good food! once we spent all day in one of the heated buses doing nothing just incase they needed us on set and we got paid a fortune just to be there so if you can get work then do it but I can see how it can get boring quite quickly.

It is funny watching so called star actors fluff lines 10 times in a row though.

Believe it or not there is an agency called 'amputees in action' and yes, we use them for bomb victims etc and specialist prosthetic work that an able bodied person couldn't do.

The pay is okay, £88 for a nine hour standard day, with overtime after, you get an extra £30 for being a walk on, which is a slightly better role, £30 for special skills like riding a bike etc, costume payments can be anything depending on what it is so the day rate can rise significantly

It can be soul crushingly boring, I'm working all the time on set but it still gets boring sometimes so Lord knows what the affectionately titled 'props with pulses' think hanging around all day.

That said, it beats the hell of out working for a living!
