Vince Green
I am/was looking at leasing a Isuzu dmax, but now starting to have second thoughts. From what I have read and been told all leasing companies are extremely harsh on any damage. Whilst I wouldn't be planning to use it like the Mule or a tractor, there would be times a stick may scratch it or the dogs on the way out. Seems a bit strange considering the main selling point is how amazing they are as work vehicles We stopped leasing vehicles about seven years ago. Never looked back since, I would never lease again, its much cheaper in the long run to buy despite the figures they give you which do appear very convincing. They are a middle man and somewhere along the line the money to pay their wages is going to have to come out of your pocket.
scobydog
Run a 2012 hilux double cab as a daily driver and shoot wagon, a 72 Beetle cabrio for sunny days and something to tinker with, the missus has a 64 plate Hyundai ix35 for work and anything else. Thinking of getting an old British motorbike for nice summer/ dry cold winter days if we ever get some. S
clanchief
I've got two also a Rdesign XC60 Volvo and a X Trail, both similar spec, both auto diesels, don't care about the mpg as we don't do too many miles. Double cabs are nice to think about but the back bit is a waste, unless you like wet things banging around, a good X Trail should cover most needs off road in fields and more and if you can find a nice Surf than they are good too. 796
We have two the other half uses a c320cdi Merc estate which is economical and plenty of room for shopping and carting the children around and I have a Nissan navara which does me for work and running around and fishing and shooting
wildfowler.250
Cheers guys! Figured most folk would have a shooting car and a 'normal' car. I currently have a work van so only do a 40 minute round trip to work daily. Plus an 8 hour round trip every other weekend to see the GF,(less than ideal). It seems tempting to have a normal car and a 4x4 but once insurance and everything is paid for, it's probably cheaper,(even with the poorer mpg) to just stick with a 4x4 for everything.. We stopped leasing vehicles about seven years ago. Never looked back since, I would never lease again, its much cheaper in the long run to buy despite the figures they give you which do appear very convincing. They are a middle man and somewhere along the line the money to pay their wages is going to have to come out of your pocket. Why is this? I'm keen to lease a car at the moment. Say I lease a 3 y.o. car for a few years. By the time it's 6 y.o. it's not worth much at all so I'm better just to lease something else than to have an old car not worth much? Thanks again! Im guessing you were thinking about leasing a 4x4 in which case: They will slap you with a bill for any damage that you may have caused to inside and out and lets face it with shooting not being the cleanest hobby in the world and over rough ground theres a good chance that in over 3 years you will have bopped it on something. If its a shooting motor and you dont want to lash out a huge amount of cash then just get yourself a crappy old jimny because an old one probably wont suffer much depreciation. Maybe even an older LPG discovery?

My offroading basically involves muddy tracks and stubble fields but worried putting dog boxes/hide gear/equipment in and out of the car will do damage. Can't win either way! Only benefit is that if I do get a 4x4 rather than lease something new, it's my own if I do damage it.. Have a good Xmas ! kennett
That was my thought in the end, it only takes one over excited dog to jump out before I tell them and slide down the back of the tail gate, or a bundle of hide poles to fall over and slide down the side. Looking at buying nearly new on finance, then it's mine to what I want with and put some cash away every month to go towards servicing and repairs. Davyo
If you do shooting, something cheap 2-4K,cheaper if possable. The less gadgets ,the less to go wrong, strip the carpets out because it will end up stinking( I used to get at least a bucket full of mud out of mine when I could be ***** to clean it).A fancy all singing and dancing 4x4 will just cause you to worry,it's like turning up on Boxing Day in all your best clobber, you'll start looking for a gap in the fence instead of throwing yourself over in your £7 combats. As others have said it will get damaged.Slid mine down a bank side ways at 2am into woodland, had a laugh ( no tears) as loads of branches ended up in the cab.Ended up going back 2 days later with the chain saws and a Mel to bash the dings out.New wing mirror, side window and tail light of the bay for less than £50 and a fresh lick of MOD green SORTED.Wouldnt like to think I was running one motor, chewing on cleaning it out at 3am as would need it clean for work at 9am.If I did I'd go for a double cab pick up, nothing worse than the smell of a fox in the cab or a busted gut of a rabbit. keg
i run a landcruiser 120- had it about ten years now and used to always run a cheap mileage car as my daily commuter. the LC was only doing about 6k between mots. Now i have sacked off the second car and the cost of the second insurance, tax etc goes into running the LC full time. I still love the truck and it ticks all boxes from a large safe family car through to weekend shooting truck. work out the figures of running two cars and the maths make sense. i have the use of the wifes company car if we need to do any long runs or dont fancy the drive in the slower LC. only other solution i could suggest is to run say a low co2 with cheap tax and then a tax free old landrover as a second truck. That said i've had enough series landrovers to appreciate the benefits of air con and a heater to go back to one. f. We have an 07 LC120, LC4. 143k and fingers crossed, it's only cost us an alternator from new ( apart from normal servicing). i run a bmw 330d and a £1500 ML 270CDI with all terrains fitted and for lamping and general tearing about my perms its excellent im a specialist diesel mechanic so maintain my own cars so the cheaper the better fo me. I love the3 ltr engine, tyres are the most important choice in my humble opinion. Even the best 4x4, if shod with stupid low profiled will struggle. Tedly47
I have a new Audi A6 as a family car and a jimny shooting bus.... We also have a bmw 130 msport that my wife mainly drives... Jimmy is rough but I don't care as it cost me 400 quid, I ripped the back seats out and boarded it out. I sometimes think about getting a newish 4x4 but it wouldn't be the same as the Jimny as I'd worry about damaging it....! Tedly
wildfowler.250
Cheers guys! Always fancied a wee jimny,(not sure why). I'm 6'2 so might be a big of a squeeze but I could look into picking one up on the cheap and maybe leasing a normal car for day to day driving. Thanks! dead eye alan
Two cars is the way forward, one family saloon buy secondhand and own it. leasing is a mugs game. the shooting wagon needs to be 88 landy pre 1975 free tax and very cheap insurance. AVB
I have a Discovery and a Mini Countryman. The problem is the wife thinks that it is her Discovery and so forbids me from getting it dirty. I now want a Defender so that I can be a 'proper' shooter. 90 or 110? Del T
Mitsubishi lancer evolution IV with 400bhp that stays in the garage most of the time and did 35miles between mots. A Peugeot expert van for work. The shoot bus is the wifes f30 bmw 330d. Clay grounds only lol and sometimes it scrapes going in the car parks. I had the same problem with our Range Rover. figgy
Most of us have a shoot/dog bus as well as a second car or even a weekend car too. For the past year my shooting bus/work car is a Subaru Forrester XT. Surprisingly capable off road. Before that a mk1 Toyota RAV4 at 17 years old when I parted company with it, everything worked from air con to heated door electric mirrors sun roof the lot. Wife hated how it rolled in corners. Weekend car is going to go, thinking of buying a few years old Toyota LC5 with low miles. As I don't really go off-road much so less chance of damage mainly farm tracks and Un paved lanes to clay clubs the Landcruiser would become the main car with a runabout for shopping/work commute and stuff. Go back to two cars and save a bundle on tax insurance service costs. Thought about RR Sport Disco4 and ML350 but after talking to a mechanic friend into 4x4's told me to go down the Toyota route. Squirrel73
I have a 2009 crv which is on demand 4wd and is decent enough off road apart from the ground clearance sometimes. I share it with the misses but was getting fed up not being able to go when I wanted so bought a 1999 jimny last week with 74k on clock for £950. It really is a great motor and so easy to repair yourself. I wish I had bought one years ago.
malkiserow
Talking to a fell the other week said that a Freelander (which I thought was a joke) is way better than people think and provided it has the BMW diesel in it 01 onwards they you should be OK or no worse than average. The fella bought one for his Mrs and is a mechanic by profession...... Anyone else got one as the second car or shoot-bus ?
