600 and 700 yard target shooting

Recommended Posts

Following on from my previous efforts at 600yards.

Shot my rifle at 600 yards and did really well again. I was dealing with a 12-15mph (tops of big trees swaying) 1/4 value left to right crosswind. My correction was 1 foot left for wind and 5 1/2 feet for drop.waiting for consistent windspeed I shot a 4 shot group and wind SWAG calculation is perfect and a 5p coin covers the group. Again I make no claim to be able to repeat this, and claim a once in a lifetime moment of clarity but did it with my uncle spotting for me. This group was a little low and off the target so I made final SWAG (Scientific, Wild,*** Guess) calculation and fired next shot to a resounding BONG!!... woohoo!! reload and fire.... BONG!! double woohoo then I realised I hadn't been paying attention properly to the wind. my 4 shot group was dead centre but slightly low. I now got my SWAG elevation correct at 5 3/4 feet and recorded hits just off centre on the plate... but you know whats coming......... I hadn't realised the wind had dropped below my windage SWAG calculation on shot 1 and it was 4 inches left of centre, and the wind was at the top of my estimation when I fired shot 2 and that was 4 inches right of centre............. down to earth with a bump............ excellent learning process though.

Right 700yds!

Repositioned the target plate at 700yds. Re-evaluate the wind and SWAG calculation to 1.5 feet left, elevation is now 8 1/2 feet correction for drop. Again wait for mid consistent wind conditions and gently squeeze trigger and had a "twitch" and pulled shot right!!....... No bong!!...... swore fluently!! compose myself and fire shot two......BONG!!! woohoo!! The mirage is now making conditions unsuitable for shooting so I called it a day and we drove down to see where those shots went. First shot was just under the plate and right, second shot was slightly right and on the bottom of the plate, SWAG correction for drop next time 8 3/4 feet which should put me dead centre. They are both inside 2 1/2 inches though including the fluffed shot....... very pleased with 1st effort at this distance. Have got the calculations for 700 now ready for next time 8 3/4 feet and have SWAGGED the calculations for the full 800yds for next time, 11 3/4 to 12 feet correction should still keep shots somewhere near and enable me to walk them up.

Really enjoying the challenge this long range stuff brings, using a CZ550 in .243, 12X swarovski on top and 75g vmax bullets.

Thanks for reading

Pure fantasy as usual.

How come you missed that rabbit last week at only 100 yards - your comment of " The ****** ducked as I pulled the trigger" fooled nobody.

In all fairness I've had rabbits duck as I've pulled the trigger. I also know evo off here has, I actually think he was videoing it when it happened as well!

Look, he's insufferable enough without someone backing him up.

As I said at the time "If you think that the rabbit had enough time to see the bullet coming and then duck, I will book you into the funny farm tomorrow!".

A 5p group at 600 yards, are you serious?

No one was more surprised than i. My uncle was driving back and to between firing point and target confirming bullet strikes for me. As i said i make no claim to be able to repeat this and can only claim a once in a lifetime moment of clarity. My previous post from back in April is here (hope the link thingy works)

I know someone you would love shooting with, as she regularly shoots out to 2000 metres.

Can't dope for toffee though, she dials everything in !

That is incredibly impressive shooting. Most of us would be delighted with a group that size at 100 metres.

Thanks for your kind words gents, WOW 2000 metres!! now that is something i would love a go at!

I thought that grin would make you smile, my uncle was in hysterics at me. At least i resisted the urge to do a lap of honour round the field with my underpants on my head (just)

At 600 yards your group size is 0.125 MOA, in those conditions it's practically impossible!

Hmm I'm thinking this although not as smart to work it out.

I'm sure shooting of that class would make the OP a world class shooter.

He isn't even using a custom rifle, a bog standard CZ550 in 243 (I've got one myself lol) it's far likelier that you only hit the board once and the rest missed completely at that range 🙈😂

Your welcome to teach me to shoot

There's a saying isn't there ?

Those that can, do, and those that can't, teach.

Unfortunately I don't have the correct qualifications or certification to tutor pupils.lol

But I do the odd demonstration, it's normally short lived through as there's always someone grassing on me. And they say there your mates lol..
