kyska
Any thoughts on the auto VW gearbox? going to look at a car tomorrow and it has the DSG system. I like the sound of an auto, my commute can be a bit snarly, and spec I want, in the colour I want, I can only find this one fairly nearby. WinchesterDave
My brother has the Audi version in his a3 and he has said he'd never go back now, smooth and effortless he says
Sprinter
DSG all the way.Driven quite a few vag cars with the DSG and they are quick changing and effortless to drive.
Schmitty
not sure if its the same as the DSG but I've got the A6 multitronic. It took a little getting used to as the pull away from standing seems delayed. Once used to it it's fine an absolutely silky smooth going through the gears. The early multitronics (pre 2008) had problems but they were ironed out in the later models. Its important to note that they require an oil change every 40,000 miles. Failure to do so could be costly. It's not really a diy job either as gearbox temperature has to be maintained at 40 degrees during the multi-part refill process.I've just had mine done at the main dealership at a cost of £
dodeer
Very good gearboxes. Used in audi and VW and skoda I have driven. Everyone I know who has a manual won't go back to one after driving an auto.
robbiep
There have been a LOT of problems with DSG automatics. They need a fluid and filter change at least every 4 years, it's expensive, so often gets skipped.
Kalahari
Old fogey here. Like manuals. Every driver I know who has moved from a manual to an auto, concentrates less and is less "connected" and I think a worse driver. Flak jacket and tin hat on. David. fat_jay
Just changed my mk 7 golf GTD. I had the manual, test drove both and went for the manual as the DSG seemed a bit "laggy" Brother in law has a golf "R" with the DSG and it's the same. That said my new car (Merc not VAG) has a 7 speed DSG and its lovely, although with the engine/model I chose there is no option for manual anyway. sishyplops
I just ordered an A3 with the s tronic as I can't be bothered to change gear anymore, the dsg is a great box but like Jay says it's a hit laggy, the new vw's now have the Audi S tronic box , stick in sport and leave it, I only ever used the flap and paddle rubbish in my A4 once in 2 yrs,
Gordon R
My eldest son had a Volkswagen Toureg for three years (from new), with the auto box. Very smooth - one of the better autos. Just gone over to a new Mercedes GLE - which he doesn't rate as highly. Edited July 27, 2016 by Gordon R
ElvisThePelvis
I have tourag with dsg , not as smooth as Porsche system but pretty great, HOWEVER I agree completely in the risk that you concentrate less with autos. I have no experience of the longevity but I would not rate merc as better than vw having had both on new vehicles in the last 3 years, both laggy compared to Porsche. B25Modelman
I had an A4 2.4 with DSG...absolutely lovely up to 128k then one night I parked it such that a lot of water entered the gap between the bonnet and the screen trim. Somehow that water entered the electrics system (twin ECU, the gearbox has its own) and I could only get 1st, 4th intermittent and reverse. The car, though immaculate, had a value of a tank of fuel. Sadly I had to call the breaker. Now I drive a cheat VW with manual box so that 'er indoors can also drive it if needs be. She don't like autos. PS the A4 did 30mpg, this VW does 55/65mpg. kyska
Well I picked the car up and must say I'm very impressed, so much easier on the a roads. It's quite intuitive, I'm getting used to getting it to change down gears by the throttle rather than having to kick it down. The flappy paddles are a bit more mysterious at the minute. DannyS
Have a DSG on my VW and it's brilliant, smooth as you like. robbiep is right about the fluid and filter tho, when it needs changing, it gets a bit jupy when crawling in traffic. I find the same with cruise control, attention starts to wander after a while on the motorway as little or no active involvement.

I agree totally with this after recently buying my first vag auto, but it is sooo easy. The enjoyment has long gone from driving for me so now I just want ease and comfort!! Twistedsanity
Mum has a 2.0 gt tdi golf with dsg box, new in 2005 now on around 80,000 miles and always faultless, to my knowledge it's still the same fluid and filter it had from.new
