I work for a big firm and today I had a tool box talk about pokemon :hmm::hmm: :hmm: :hmm::hmm:

At one of the London mainline rail stations they were telling people, via the information boards, that if they were playing Pokemon to be aware of trains and not to go onto the rails!

We have them on a fairly regular basis, mostly consisting of how we're going to tackle a certain issue or work methods, then when we get on site and boss is feeling the pressure it all goes out the window.

His long time favourite is 'you don't need to spend time studying the drawings; that's what we pay the drsughtsman for'. Then when there's a cock up, it's ' you should always study your drawings lads; he's only human'. I can't tell you how annoying that is.

What's a toolbox talk?

IMHO it is a means to protect higher management should anything go wrong so that they can prove that the correct procedures have been adhered to by ticking all the right boxes.

Having said that, sensible risk assessments, method statements etc can only be a good thing to ensure safe working practices.

However, all too often COSHH, BREEAM etc. etc are given lip service and as previously posted, many have jumped on the 'safety' bandwagon with the result that the cost of any project is increased by a certain amount of unnecessary administration.

I'm sure that many in the building industry, particularly in 'elf & safety' would probably disagree !

In the building industry over uses "'elf & safety" in general taking it to cover the lowest common denominator with no room allowed for the application, also it is often used as a weapon by main contractors which often is the reason for many of the "tool box talks".

We have "flash info"leaflets whenever something nasty happens to someone,be it cut or as has occurred in France and Spain killed .The plastics industry is a minefield of ways to get burnt, crushed ,cut and electrocuted so we are H.S.E heavy but are glad to be.There,s a 5 minute briefing every day b4 work starts and regular checks on PPE use by safety reps.Despite this people still get injured ,molten plastic takes your skin with it when the hospital removes it and you only get 1 pair of eyes so not all Elf N Safety is an over reaction

Do 'they' stand on a tool box and look down on the minions?

There's are times that even that wouldn't make folks listen. We bang on about H&S wearing the correct PPE for certain jobs, then we get someone with chemical in there eye's. We are now disciplining those types of staff, to the point they can loose their job.
