kody
Would a 26 inch barrelled gun with 1/2 choke kill the same distance as a 30 inch barrel with the same choke

kody
Just wondered as I thought the longer barrel would hold it pattern together at a further distance Maybe I'm wrong

dipper
Longer barrels give you more range . 4" Dipper
wymberley
Just wondered as I thought the longer barrel would hold it pattern together at a further distance Maybe I'm wrong If it did, then as choke is a performance and not a barrel measurement, it would be tighter than 1/2. dougall
ballistically surely the same but, might find the 30inch easier to place on the higher stuff though..
Albert 888
Is this similar to rifles, ie burn rates. Using standard cartridges what would the shortest barrel length be before you loose fps. Im generally interested.
Stonepark
Is this similar to rifles, ie burn rates. Using standard cartridges what would the shortest barrel length be before you loose fps. Im generally interested. From 24 to 34 might be 80fps at the muzzle and 20fps down range, most of the velocity is generated in the first 18 inches. Walker570
If it's in the middle of the pattern ...where it should be ...the bird will not notice the difference. Some of the cannon shells being used by the 80 - 90yrd shooters might need a bit more room to burn all of that powder successfully, hence the fashion of 32 inch ..even heard 34 inch mentioned this week. sishyplops
I'm would assume 1/2 choke should produce the same pattern in either 26-30" but it would be very interesting to see a pattern plate if some one has one
Wymondley
IMHO barrel length is more about how the gun handles than ballistics.
Adrian Foster
I understand that anything over 20-24 inches is entirely about balance. https://shotgunreport.com/2012/06/05/effects-of-barrel-length/
fortune
Would a 26 inch barrelled gun with 1/2 choke kill the same distance as a 30 inch barrel with the same choke Yes. It all depends on if you can centre the pattern on the target.
