aga man Posted February 22, 2017 Report Share Posted February 22, 2017 (edited) Found myself amongst the woodies on some oil seed rape this afternoon. I wasn't very enthusiastic to be honest, seems all i have done lately is chase big flocks of pigeons around for very little. My mate tan has been pestered by a farmer to shoot some pigeons on a rape field which has had some damage but is a pain to shoot with foot paths etc. Over the hedge is more rape which i have permission to shoot so the plan was for him to shoot his pain field and i would go over on my bit and keep the birds moving. I travelled light with only 4 dead birds and a couple of boxes of cartridges along with a dozen or so in my bag. As tan arived on his field he disturbed a good few hundred pigeons and as i arrived at my field i was in awe! best part of a thousand pigeons lifted and swirled about in the wind. Although the pigeons were moving around everywhere i noticed a hedge line that pigeons were following and luckily for me the hadge was thick with ivy to help shelter me from the wind. It was clear the pigeons were very reluctant to leave the area and pushing them off initially was tricky. They only ever moved to woodland closeby. Soon enough i had put up a scruffy hide and put 3 deads on cradles and one on a bouncer. I was hoping the decoys would steer the line over me more than anything. Before i could get the gun out of the slip pigeons were in the decoys i shot a sigle and the a pair. Almost instantly more pigeons were heading towards me, this time though 200 or so coming into the decoys. I didn't fire at these and simply waved my arms at them, so as not to educate them to shot sound. Before too long tan was banging away downwind of me and the first hour was pretty hectic. As thing settled down my shooting became more flightline shooting with just the odd pigeon decoying. The masses of woodies coming on lines from nearby woods and battling the windy conditions was a sight to behold. At 4pm i was thinking of ringing Mrs aga to bring me more cartridges but at 4.15 with only 7 carts left it was all over. I managed 29 pigeons and i f i had shot better i would have doubled my score. That said the flighting birds were not always easy. Pigeons decoyed a lot better for tan and he managed 44 so 73 between us which is a real result for us just lately. The huge numbers of pigeons here were keen to come back for a last feed as we packed up. The busted myth was the rape over my side which has been left alone till now is a variety called compass which is one the varieties that pigeons don't eat due to its bitter taste. They are all over it now and grazing it like sheep! Thanks for reading. We have got a nice lot of pigeons on the estate and just over the boundary , well into four figures , but the same ole story , I went yesterday afternoon on what was one of the mildest days we have had this year , the pigeons started to leave our next door neighbours woods in the 100s , this was getting on for 2pm , having quickly walked the pigeons , I was set up by 2 . 20pm and I had shot a pigeon within a couple of minutes , the sound of my shot was blowing on the wind towards the wood that they were coming from and for 10 minutes there were pigeons every where , but after the little flurry , that was more or less it and if you hadn't seen the flock earlier on , you wouldn't have thought there was a pigeon in the area . Friday I am going to have a go in the morning instead of the afternoon to see if that make any difference , you wont know until you try and its better to try and fail and not to try in the first place . Thanks JDog, it would of been perfect to have you over this afternoon, if only i knew how it would pan out. I'm sure we will be shooting those birds again so will be in touch. Thanks mm, always the same this time of year. You chase them about and shoot 6 when you expect a decent do, then all of a sudden one day they play ball. I think you are right though tan had twice as many decoys and a turbo flapper and had more decoying success. I enjoyed shooting them off the line though, would have kicked myself if i ran out of shells! If JDog had of been with me we would have shot 50 60 easily off the line, my shooting was pants to start off!
