Gordon R
I hadn't given it much thought, but if I do speak out about idiots who boast about breaking the law - so be it.I have had Fords XR4x4, RS Turbo and Cosworth and have nothing against reasonably quick cars. I do wonder what shooting-antis make of shooters who like to break the speed limit or drive like a plonker and publicly post about it - all with a nod's as good as a wink, "suits you" attitude. If that means, in the eyes of an idiot, that I have a chip on my shoulder, I don't have a problem with that either. I'd rather we just left it though. Perhaps we shall see if you are half as adult as you claim to be. Edited August 15, 2017 by Gordon R

shaun4860
Can we stop the bickering please, I for one took this as a slightly tongue in cheek post and nothing I have read from the OP has changed my mind, If you disagree with what the OP is saying then simply don't read the posts, it's like watching the telly for an hour and then complaining about how bad the programme has been, tv's have a switch channel/off button

Giving opinons now on a purchase to be made in 12 to 18 months time is a bit daft imho. True, but then I'm not going to be able to buy new, so the question stands. In fact, what will probably happen is that the one of the cars being sold new today will go through their first owner, after which I'll buy it second hand. They take the depreciation hit, I get the car I want. If I could decide what that is...

Ha I've got a hot hatch if that's the right term for it. (bmw m140i) and my gun doesn't fit in the boot. It wouldn't get down any lanes (even the track to doveridge clay ground has to be taken slow.) But it's great fun, it's not ideal for most type of shooting but then neither would and exeç saloon or similar. I've had a few, focus st's, a fiesta st, polo and golf gti's. Always managed to do what I wanted to with them. Even had some rally tyres on one of my polo' s for the bad winter weather and gravel tracks I used to frequent I did find you can get 2 12 foot carp rods in 2 pieces, net, box, bag and Brolly in the polo and have the Mrs in aswell To each of you, thank you. Hadn't considered the powerful diesel route, but it looks like it's a popular choice with the PW massif, so worthy of some more attention. I'd really only gone round the "top 10 hot hatch" lists on the net and read up on the ones that appeared most often on those lists. I'll broaden the search. That said, I am worried that a Chancellor, short of taxpayers' hard-earned at a crucial moment, might decide to slap a huge tax on diesel cars because they're "polluting" (aren't they all?). They say they won't, but I never believe them...

No. Audi RS3, I'd drive the good Dr Wife's, but it's a rat pit inside, I darent start cleaning it!

I change cars more often than I change my undercrackers! 306gti6 205gti civic type r, focus ST170 st225. RS mk1, escorts RS turbo, mondeo st220, astra mk4 gsi, vectra gsi, vectra vxr, astra vxr, clio 182, leon and ibiza cupra, golf gti turbo mk4 mk3 and mk2.... And more old skool motors! The all round 'best' was the 306gti6 I'm Astra vxr was good fun, did take it to a trackday and did enjoy it. Also broke it! Not the cheapest to run, not the most reliable, not the fastest but by no means the slowest. With vredestein winter grips it took me from Yorkshire to Aberdeenshire for a weeks wildfowling with the dog sprawled across the rear seats. I would say go for one, good car for the money if you pick a decent one! I have now grown up and got a family car...skoda octavia vrs..it's a lovely car to drive, cheap to tax and good mpg, accelerates very well (around 7seconds to 60) and top end..well most definitely fast enough! Now having drove the skoda alot I do wish I had looked at and test drove a fabia vrs, maybe worth a look I use my work van for mu shooting now, Little pug partner, gets me most places..still young and fit enough to walk where the van won't get me! button
Hot hatch - lowered suspension - I see a problem going down some of the roads to a shoot. I hope your not suggesting that we now have to buy a car to ensure the FEO wouldn't approve or hold it against us at renewal time? Get the VXR and put a sign on top to attract extra attention - perhaps even from your FEO. You are jumping from one extreme to another - the question is why? A 2.0 diesel Astra would probably travel far more quickly than the capabilities of 90% of drivers. If you have the urge to travel quickly - occasionally stretching the speed limit - let me know and I will stay out of your way. I see boy racers almost every day, in quickish cars, without a clue. They amuse me with their lack of ability, but I do worry about some poor sod they run into. I hope your not suggesting we now need the FEO's approval when buying a car! Tim Kelly
Years ago a mate of mine had a MK1 Golf GTI. He knocked the sump plug off the motor going down a typically rutted farm track to get to where we parked. My Citroen BX was fine, click suspension to high position and keep rolling. LOL. I wouldn't want a whizzy car, they're too limiting. Bought an Octavia estate recently as a financial break from a Jeep Grand Cherokee. That sucker is way too close to the ground too, so that's no good for going shooting in, and all I ever need to do is get down a farm track to where I can park! Have to take the van shooting now. Duckandswing
If you shoot or fish to me a second car to fit the purpose is a must.Leaves your other car damage and stinky free. I'm with Davyo on this one. I have an old CRV that has off road tyres. Gets used for carting dogs around and shooting. It's used and abused but cost very little to buy and I service it myself. Only cons really are the tax (£295) and it's thirsty. It does let me keep the other family car nice and clean though.
neutron619
If you shoot or fish to me a second car to fit the purpose is a must.Leaves your other car damage and stinky free. Thanks all for the further list of things to look at - I think it's now about as long as my arm! Plenty to keep me from getting bored at work for the next day or three! I take your point on the second car and it would be nice. I'd even keep the "rollerskate" if I could - but I don't know if three lots of tax, MOT, services, etc. (including my wife's car, for which I also pay) is manageable. It might, as I said, turn out that any of the interesting and sporty cars mentioned in this thread turn out to be too expensive - but I'll carry on exploring the idea until that becomes clear. Thanks again to all who have made suggestions. Much appreciated.
Gordon R
I hope your not suggesting we now need the FEO's approval when buying a car! Perish the thought , but comments about breaking the speed limit do attract attention. Anyone who thinks that Firearms staff don't visit this Forum are sadly mistaken. Breastman
Don't bother with an Astra if you're looking for boot space, even thought the MK6 has a much fatter backside than the MK5 it hasn't gained a great deal of internal space and I could only fit a broken shotgun and rifles with short barrels (<16") in my MK5
Davyo
If you going to get a car performance or family then get one you can't maintain (properly). I was in a alloy shop last week looking for a wheel and tyre package for my new car.A guy next to me had a 60 plate Audi TT and was looking for the same. However he was looking to put the cheapest budget tyres he could get his hands on, against the advise of the salesman. I listened with interest to the salesman advise. On returning home I watched a YouTube clip on the difference between a budget and tip brand tyre. Its quite shocking that an additional £30/£50 a corner can save your life. theshootist
I've used both a Subaru Forester XT and a Forester STI, both modified north of 300bhp. They are extremely capable cars. The XT especially is pretty good offroad. In straight line terms the Forester STI matches a Golf R or Audi S3, but not an RS3! The Forester beats them all on load capacity and versatility. I am also a believer in the Subaru constant AWD system, which I think is better than Haldex (just my opinion). Consumables are all expensive, given the larger brakes, better rubber and more frequent oil changes. Fuel consumption can be horrible too! timmytree
golf gti mk5.....been driving them 9 years..you will not find a better all rounder.... Golf TDI estate for me, lots of room and very practical. Torquey little engine, front wheel drive copes well if you have decent tyres. Ultra reliable and plenty of cheap spares. Fuel economy is 60+mpg on a run at legal speeds, fully loaded and with a trailer tent behind it still does 50+mpg. Posh, fast cars are nice but you'll probably get a bit "precious" about leaving your pride and joy in a layby while you go shooting.
