What did you quitters expect. FGS much, much more to come. £18bn just an opening gambit. Unfortunately its not just the quitters that have to pay the price.

'Brussels makes us' LOL you must be on one.:lol::lol: just like the playground. MISS he made me do it!!!!

If you take into account ALL the contributions to EU pensions etc made by us, they actually owe us money! Time to walk away, NOW!

I suspect that the majority of people on PW have never been involved in serious negotiations other than with their other half. And they probably lose that one!

She is trying to move the negotiations forward. And the £18n is the cost of a transition agreement i.e what we would pay for partial membership during the transition, plus cost of our remaining commitments.

We don't want and exit without a deal and neither do the EU.

At least 50% of the contributions we made over the last 43 years went towards EU pensions (NOT ours), towards building fancy EU HQ, which will still be there after we leave, grants to other EU nations, so lets ask the EU for OUR share of all this to be returned, Then they will OWE us!

Because it's cheaper and practical, part of the bargain. Identify EU needs, meet those needs and distribute value to build trust and move forward.

TRUST? That,s the funniest joke I,ve heard this year! We trusted them for 43 years, and we got royally screwed!

Why dont they offer something back then ?

At what point in these one sided negotiations have the EU made any kind of friendly or conciliatory gesture?

Im sorry ,but trying to build trust with them is like inviting a lion round for dinner, our dear cousins in Brussels couldnt care less what happens to us after we leave, they are just bothered how much money they can extract out of it.

The real Europeans, the manufacturers and citizens who live, travel, trade and work here, should be the first consideration for the EU, that is their JOB!

But remoaners like you seem to forget all about what the EU is actually for, helping Europe to work together.

Blinded by the inane rantings of the leftie press, some people need to stand back and look at the bigger picture.

CORRECT!

Someone has to foot the bill that the EU has, for paying the people trafficers (criminals involved in slavery) in Africa, not to traffic people to the EU.

I know, :good: it's an ingenious idea, pay a criminal not to commit a crime, so he can commit it anyway (he is a criminal after all), and make twice as much money.

Just shows the mentality of the unelected, unelectable dictatorship that is the EU. Can't understand why any sane person would want to be a part of it (unless you're one of the dictatorship elite).

Just tell the EU where they can shove it and stop paying them, if they want a divorce settlement then maybe we should give them the remaining debt from both world wars, it is after all, theirs really.

Well said!

OK then...... But

I think not. UK plc has invested large sums in European infrastructure e.g. Strasbourg, etc, etc.... why would one walk away without one's due share of the whole thing??

Correct!

In 1975, Harold Wilson persuaded us to say YES to a "Common Market"....despite protests from both Enoch Powell, on the Right, and Tony Benn, on the Left. They both said that we would lose our sovereignty to a Federal superstate....

Now that traitorous creep, Jeremy Corbyn, and his nasty buddy Keir Starmer, are just stirring the pot, trying their damndest to disrupt our exit from the EU...and there are enough nutters out there, prepared to vote for Corbyn, who could just bring this all about! Labour fooled us in 1975, and are trying to do it again!

I hear there is a powerful group of Labour MP's pressing the leadership to reverse the decision to leave the EU single market and the customs union.....more drip, drip, drip.....towards remain? Interesting to see what comes out of the Labour conference 2017!

It may be my conspiracy theory at the moment, but I wouldn't be surprised to find that the political classes from all parties are conspiring with the banks, big business and other remainers to slow down, stall and frustrate Brexit until such time that it's so messed up......they can get the decision reversed!

The Labour "Conference isn,t a real conference at all....it,s just a Hard Left rubber stamping the fact that the Marxists and Trots have taken over a once good Party.

When was it a good party? Under Wilson, Callaghan, Foot, Kinnock, Smith, B Liar, Broon or the other brother?

And I "suspect" your comment is bit condescending, considering you don't know anything about those you are addressing!

Why is she trying to move negotiations forward? The EU negotiators don't seem bothered, they are not trying to "move the negotiations forward"......they are effectively saying "you accede to our demands now, and we may give you something later, maybe"............no one other than a fool will go into any negotiations to buy or sell anything, without being prepared to walk away without a deal......especially if the other party won't negotiate.........if you do you will certainly end up with a carp deal!

At the moment the one thing that makes sense to me is May's statement that "no deal is better than a bad deal"

Depends how you read it, and what your POV is…..

I read that as AVB pointing out that following all the usual 'give em nowt' shouts etc, people ought to realise weather we like it or not that our union with Europe was in effect a Contract, and you can't just walk away from a contract when you feel like it without having consequences.

I think you'll find it is an Association Agreement (AA) or a treaty, not a contract!....if it were a contract, how would a breach be remedied? Who would sit in judgment? And who would enforce such a judgment?

the brexit negotiations will now take longer as Merkel has to sort out a government .She wont be able to tell the EU negotiators the way forwards so again drawing the exit longer. as has kb1 pointed out it is a contract but the contract is not the one we signed up to this is the whole point of brexit . we voted for a trade aggreement not control by Germany who effectively runs the EU i would like to know what debts we owed in 1975 before we joined to what debts we have now paying into this money pit

Under Attlee and Gaitskell....it,s never been my party of choice, but it has not always been full of idiots, like it is today!

It's nothing like a contract, we are a member of a club, one which we have for years payed far more into than we got back, the 'membership' payments are up to date and payed in full, we've followed the club rules and have given notice of our leaving the club, it's already been looked at and from a legal perspective their is no legal necessity to pay an exit bill and I and many others would argue there was no moral grounds to pay one either, so I suppose it does depend on how you read it, if you turn it upside down and read it back to front, with an agenda I suppose you could try and twist it into us owing them money, but of course it would be a load of nonsense.

An experiment that hasn't worked for us!

Look at it critically , who has it worked for ?

Not Spain,Italy or Greece, you could argue that it has benefited the Baltic states and Eastern Europe, but look what might happen to them if they dont 'tow the line'

So much money has been poured into 'projects' there, imagine their 'divorce' bill.

By far the biggest beneficiary has been Germany, and it can be argued that they also have the biggest say on what goes down in the EU.

Was it supposed to be like that ?

I thought we all had an equal say, if not ,what exactly is the pecking order?

I, if you turn it upside down and read it back to front, with an agenda I suppose you could try and twist it into us owing them money,

If you turn it round a bit more, it makes far more sense that they owe US money.

Like many others, we have left you boys to play with your tinfoil hats ( wouldn't want us 'Remainers' reading your thoughts now would we)

Democracy is in place - 28 Nations of which we HAVE elected our representatives, all hold Council.

If a recommendation is made then it's voted on- believe that's a Democratic process, or do you believe the other 27 gang up on us against everything?

Now, even though a law can be recommended, there are still powers to veto it...

Corruption???? Hmmmm, let's look closer to home? Expenses scandals etc- everyone everywhere is to some extent guilty of something?

If you can honestly look in the mirror and say you don't then please go to www.imasaint.vatican.it

That's EU 101 in its most simplified form, complexities of the system is too great for my little brain- just like our very own British laws.

Please take the above in jest, it's just a forum boys n girls

And when did anything the British put forwards ever get accepted in the heavily pro-socialist EU Parliament? In 40 years, they have always had a huge majority! It,s like my local council, Labour for 80 years, and the place is a toilet!

Corruption in the EU in BILLIONS....here it,s pennies compared to that! Where are the audited accounts, Jaymo? As for democracy, when 27 nations always vote against you, where is the democratic process?

Between £350 and £500 Billion net contribution depending on which figures you believe for them to run a huge trade deficit with us. Why are we even talking about paying them for a trade deal, the whole thing is a farce
