nnorman32
Hi, Looking through a popular social media website showing pictures of cats, thoughtful motivational memes and staged pics (showing that their life is better than yours) when up pops another UK petition for the return of handguns for FAC owners in the UK. At 100,000 signatures, this petition will be considered for debate in Parliament. Took a look and at the bottom was a line about for home defence -Parliament will then look at the petition and say "Nah". However. If the Birmingham gun quarter was a large industry and was selling uk made handguns worldwide ( can't think of a company today like Webley, Adams or Enfield still making British handguns - but I could be wrong) it might be a different story. But since British Small Arms is reduced to selling air guns it seems unlikley. If all the UK shooters signed up together. If all the UK shooting organisations got together. If it was realistic - If it were a petition to allow the return of .22 rimfire target pistols then I would consider signing but a handful of people suggesting handguns for self defence is in my opinion a non starter. panoma1
Agree with the majority, however petitions and protest show dissatisfaction, just because it's unlikely to happen doesn't mean you shouldn't register your support for something you believe in! Agreed, BUT, the self defence bit is the killer here, simply not thought out properly!
Paul1440
Self defense bit has ruled out any chance of an appeal being considered.
nagantino
The HD thing was a mistake, but unless a desire is there for an easing of the restrictions then it will not happen, but the shooting fraternity must show the desire. If you talk it down it will never happen. Northern Ireland, The Islle of Man and the Channel Islands have these rights. Why not everyone else? It would be a long road but only if shooters really want those rights restored.

I can't see any UK government lifting the ban on handguns, why would they there is nothing in it for them.
Katash
If all the UK shooters signed up together. Sadly there are too many people in this sport (and indeed on this forum) who will gladly throw their fellow shooters under the bus to divert the public's attention away from their particular area of shooting. Graham M
Told this story before as well. Back in 96 the pistol lads took a petition around the sports club regarding the pistol ban. The shotgunning lads refused to sign, saying they actually agree with the ban. The government then decided it may be a good idea to ban pump-action and semi-auto shotguns (later differed to a limited magazine). The following Sunday they bought their own petition around the club regarding this shotgun ban............................... Being told to go and **** themselves didn't go down too well. We will always be our own enemy
Breastman
I made a comment in the same vain on FB and the lad turned out to be 14 yrs old! I think the exuberance of youth may have got the better of him!
