bruno22rf
Who cares anymore? about as much credibility as a Cocoa Tin Lid on a chain. The whole idea of the Gong being a respected award has been rubbished by awarding it to people who have revelled in obscurity or celebrated failure. TriBsa
The May 2017 Tory manifesto said: Quote “We will review the honours system to make sure it commands public confidence, rewards genuine public service and that recipients uphold the integrity of the honours bestowed.”

JohnfromUK
I believe the system works by Party Leaders making recommendations to a 'committee' of all parties. There is a political 'quota' for Peerage allocations and I believe knighthoods. Typically the 'grandees' from each party get Peerages (Lords Heseltine, Tebbitt, Prescott, Callagham, Steele, Rennard etc.) I believe they get the same allocation, hence there being far more Lib Dems than would be expected in the Lords. I think it is much the same for knighthoods - in that they are selected by the party leaders - so Clegg will have been nominated by Cable. Because there are so few LibDems overall, and the allocations per party are the same, a very high proportion of LibDem MPs seem to get honours. My grandfather received a knighthood - from George VI in 1949 - presumably recommended by Clement Attlee as Prime Minister. He was involved in higher eduction and one of the main the main people involved in setting up British style higher education (particularly universities) throughout the Commonwealth. walshie
This isn't just a gong though is it? It's a knighthood. For what? Sir Nick and Lady whatshername. You can bet they insist people use the titles too.
TriBsa
Now all the runners and riders are out Clegg's knighthood makes sense. There's awards for the PC and LGBT brigade and liberal chums. Common sense is not awarded. The Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police credited with the cutting back on stop and search gets a knighthood. But knife crime has gone up as a result. As the americans say "go figure". Dougy
I think Jeremy Kyle should get a knighthood for all the good work he does.
