mattyg1086
Hi all I'm looking to change my car this year and need some help. I want a 4x4 or a pickup as I love them and need space for dogs and shooting and fishing but I do 30k a year up and down the motorway to work and back so do I A. Forget about a 4x4 and get an estate car. B. Get a small car to use for work like a diesel fiesta that will do a million mpg and get a truck. Or C. Just get the most fuel efficient 4x4 I can afford. TIA Matt
Hamster
A - maybe one with AWD.
inthedark
Get an Audi A4 diesel estate for the motorway (reliable, comfortable, economical). If you do 30,000 miles in a Fiesta you'll be good for nothing but posting on pigeon watch. It'll also do for getting about fishing and dogging, just forget about going off road. You know it makes sense
Medic1281
Audi A6 or A4 All Road, or Octavia scout?
bluesj
how about doing it the other way round, get a good car for all the miles and a cheaper 4x4 for the other bits. what you save on fuel would probably pay the tax and insurance on a pick up. Def a good way of looking at it!
itchy trigger
I bought a shogun sport just for the shooting and fishing, was cheap enough I thought, just sailed through its MOT with no advisorys, between 24 (towing) and 29mpg, great for the dogs, doesn't matter about the mess, e class estate for the motorway/long distance travelling, and when she has the posh frock on, best I've had 51.5mpg there and back journey to doveridge friend has a Subaru outback, 2.5 I think, impressed with that, quick and quiet, 5 labs and a spaniel in the cage and that has the back seats up Edited January 16, 2018 by itchy trigger subaru
Hendrix's rifle
Skoda yeti, good on fuel, good 4wd system if you get the 4x4 one, plenty of space for dogs and kit and good for commuting
Harnser
At best you will average about 25 miles to the gallon from any of the big 4x4 pick ups . If fuel cost is an issue then don’t get one . None of the 4x4 are renowned for high mpg . harnser
Mungler
As above, with that annual mileage I’d look at those big work miles and not the short Shooting miles. Look at an Audi / BMW estate and see which one has the better 4x4 system (which I think is the Audi AWD) Edited January 16, 2018 by Mungler
Stonepark
I do similar mileage in my Duster at 50mpg (4x4 1.5l diesel).

Mungler
These threads are funny. It’s each owner / user of a particular car / truck insisting theirs is the best option but without any evidence Indeed, without wishing to be rude some of the suggestions / assertions put forward seem to me to be rather ambitious to say the least
nevb
I run my own cars for work at 30k+/year, just done another 3 years in another 3.0 Hilux which averaged 31.2 mpg (every mile and litre of fuel logged and mpg calculated, Yorkshire man you see!) that's just short of £6000 of fuel per year... I now run an Audi A4 190 black edition 2.0 diesel (can get them 4wd if required) same fuel logging etc averaging 51 mpg, on target this year to use £3500 in fuel and its far better to drive comfortable etc. £2500 will buy and run a decent 4x4 for pleasure... it runs my old Hilux just for shooting with cash to spare... Cheers Nev
norfolk dumpling
I would seriously have a look at the Subaru range. Not stylish but bullet proof, good off-road and quite quick too. Economy not the best but it would tick all the other boxes.
Mungler
I always liked the Forester Turbo - fun to drive away from the lights and capable, but juicy on the fuel, but hey you can't have it all.
henry d
Skoda Scout owner, reasonable off road, thirsty around town, and a dream to drive long distances. I did Perth to Plymouth on a tank of fuel with a kayak on the roof and fully loaded.
Dave at kelton
Choice of make model is up to you but the suggestion of a good car for the miles and a cheap 4x4 for shooting is my way of doing things. Do you really want to do the miles in a car that has had wet dogs and shooting gear in it for a few days. Done that and wouldn't do it again.
