jose rato
Hi everyone, I am keen to get my shotgun licence but i am unsure what is actually required. I live in the Scottish borders and would like to go pigeon shooting even geese 😆. Any advice?
JTaylor91
Fill in the form, pay your £79.50. Post it to your local police force. Fit a cabinet to a solid wall. Have a home visit from an FEO to check you aren’t a loon and you have security. Licence arrives on door mat.

A shotgun cert does not require a reason (like land permission) to be granted. But you cannot shoot on land without (preferably written) permission. I understood it as him asking if he needed a permission to get a shotgun certificate, as in a reason to have one.

As Rewulf has pointed out, you need permission to shoot anywhere in the UK. Obviously if you own the land you don't need permission, as you would be the one granting said permission. If you don't have permission, then it is classed as armed trespass. Edited October 16, 2019 by Newbie to this
jose rato
Thank you I was asking about permission for the certificate ☺ Once I have the certificate makes it easier to go and ask permission to shoot vermin etc .

hod
Police Scotland will also expect you to have some sort of shotgun experience they can verify.

Have some idea of what you have available locally and what you want to do - things like knowing where your local clay range is, or who you plan to shoot with or where you plan to go. I got the strong impression that my FEO was happier when he spoke to me and I explained about the three closest places I'd looked at and why I was going to the one I chose, despite not having done much shooting before.
