Lloyd90
If you were going to buy a 308 rifle which you wanted for a bit of fun plinking and intended to book the odd stalk, what would you consider for around the £1,000 mark? I am tempted by the Mauser M12 - 308 🤔
Walker570
I would just buy another barrel for my Thompson/Centre Encore but I have a 300 H&H which covers 30 cal pretty well.
ninjaferret
I would say the last thing you want to be doing with a 308 or indeed any rifle is plinking, I'm not sure your firearms officer would allow one been held just for that ! figgy
Ninja ferret he did state going stalking. I think plinking us allowed. Target shooting is plinking. Any reason for .308 Lloyd? Not many I know are buying them, most are changing to other calibers. 6.5 creedmore, 28 Nosler, 7mm for flatter shooting rifles. He means load development . I’ll be shot down now but I’d buy another howa in the blink of an eye. I’ve used it out to 500 yards with great results and it’s never let me down. Maybe if I tried a Mauser i might feel differently . Used some lovely guns like sako , tikka , Remington etc but I still love my howa
ninjaferret
AH RIGHT ! I've only had Sako and Styer Mannlicher both amazing, with a nightforce stuck on top.
Stonepark
CZ557 Predator looks quite good... I have the older CZ550 and can't fault it as more accurate than me.

Newbie to this
Another vote for Howa.
welshwarrior
Depends what you like, I’ve semi custom remis full custom Mauser actions Sako semi customs. CZs tweaked. All did the job. If I was looking for an off the shelf general rifle I’d be looking at Begarra

Plinking is just informal target practice, zeroing etc etc, how else do you zero your rifles or ensure they are on the point of aim? How else do you practice for shooting situations? Field practice is needed 3 hours ago, figgy said: Ninja ferret he did state going stalking. I think plinking us allowed. Target shooting is plinking. Any reason for .308 Lloyd? I was going to get a .270 but many on here said the difference between the two is negligible and 308 was easier to get cheap ammo for informal target shooting. welshwarrior
Loads of options all good I’ve not come across a bad one and in effect it’s a tweaked up remi with a good barrel.

Jason_ox
Tikka or Bergara. I have a T3x. Excellent rifles that do what they say. Also if you get bored there’s a heap of aftermarket kit for them. I have looked at a Begara HMR in .308 and sorely tempted to put in a vari for one.
