Punctured Eye

Walking through the woods today and when calling Bramble back noticed her eye had filled with blood and was obviously bothering her. Trip to the vets fearing the worst..... the vet took a look at her and she has a small puncture in her eye, likely from a thorn they said. Numerous tablets and drops for the next 48 hours and hoping for the best. Anybody had a similar experience? The vet advised there was a small chance of losing the eye but is optimistic she will recover.

That does not look good but if the vet says the dog may recover then fingers crossed.

I’ve put all the drops in and given her the tablets, it seems to be better than it was already. It isn’t bothering her as much and it’s not all swollen and closed up. Keeping fingers crossed for the next couple of days.

So sorry to read this, hope she recovers.

My B.I.L. has a fluffy lapdog thing which went under a table with a Labrador which wagged it’s tail vigorously and hit the little mutt in the eye. The poor dog lost an eye. A Lab has a powerful wag and can make your leg smart if it hits you.

I had something similar several years ago, but my springer got a thorn in each eye. Luckily I had the number of an eye specialist who was waiting for me when I got to my local vets. He removed the thorns gave me drops and tablets and after a few follow up visits gave the dog the all clear.

That’s reassuring to hear. She’s on 3 sets of drops and 2 sets of tablets.

Just checked it has been nearly 10 years since my dog had a similar injury and in that time he's had no further issues. The opthalmologist did stress at the time the importance of putting in the drops as he said getting an infection was the biggest danger to the dogs eyes.

An update after the vets. All is going well so far, she had a small ulcer on the eye which has pretty much healed up. No signs of infection and is healing up nicely, eye is reacting to light well but there is a bit of constriction of the pupil compared to the healthy eye which should get better in the next couple of days. Shouldn’t be any sight loss. Carry on with the treatment for another 48 hours then it’s another check up. Not out of the woods yet but looks like she’s got lucky.

Glad she's recovering well.

Best of luck
