not really convinced that france and germany are wincing   about the loss of a few billion in annual trade............not after i have seen the eyewatering ammounts that have come out of the back of the cupboard for this corvid-19 malarky

What he says. Gammon read newspapers like the Daily Express may quote X billion Euros until they and their readers are red, or redder even, in the face. But for France and Germany this isn't about the money and never was. German re-unification cost by some estimates two trillion Euros. The so called loss in trade of a no-deal Brexit would in any case be compensated for by the gain, especially to Frankfurt and less so to Paris and possibly Dublin, of the closing of free unhindered access to EU markets to British financiers based in London. And as I will again predict Johnson will sell out British fishermen if the cost of preserving that access for Rees-Mogg and his financier cronies in the City is reneging to some degree or other on the UK's fishing rights.

I stopped reading when I got to Gammon

if boris capitulates on the fishing...it will be total political suicide............fishing accounts for very little monitary wise...but it is the one thing the british people actually understand..

Fishing is a massive bargaining chip. It is worth relatively little in financial terms to us but a lot more to the French. I hear what you are saying regarding political suicide but would you want him to sacrifice the city (which funds the rest of the U.K.) in order to increase our fishing rights?

And let’s remember that the EU could easily close down their market to U.K. fish so the extra fish would be worth little.

Fishing is a classic example of everything that is wrong with the EU. You are right its small in financial terms but it shouldn't be

Is it a problem of the EU or just the reality of market forces especially with dwindling fish stock and landing quotas.

No Spain alone is allowed to take much more fish out of our waters as we are, I think its about six times as much. Then there is France, they are allowed to take much more than we are, and Belgium and Holland. Out of OUR waters

Its the most graphic example of bent legislation on the part of Brussels, albeit many years ago. Come to Cornwall and I will get my fisherman mate to explain it all to you.

I get the fishing quotas and how they are ‘unfair’ on British fishermen. My point was more that if the EU closes its market to U.K. fish is their a big enough domestic or worldwide market for it? Prices may plummet which may benefit U.K. consumers but won’t necessarily benefit the fishermen.

I just had a quick look at some numbers around the U.K. fish consumption and catch quotas.

The U.K. are allowed to catch 300,000 tonnes of Cod. Yet we consume 121,000. So a lot must be exported, I assume to the EU. If the EU closes its market to our fish, which they have threatened to do if we don’t give them access to fish, we may be able to catch more but we don’t even consume all we eat at the moment. So how does it help?

These numbers have been gathered quickly so they could be wrong but if they aren’t I fail to see how expanding our fishing will help.

The remainers said we were uneducated little Britainers who didn't understand

 How time quickly clouds the mind. Those that voted to stick with the EU said all along, that leaving would cost both the EU and the UK dear. The quitters labeled such a preposterous suggestion as scaremongering  The truth comes home to bite.

It's the Express so I would not take too much from it.

This is the whole point of the complex debate on fishing. It's as much to do with migration fishing grounds and markets as numbers caught. Whilst its not such a big deal for the UK it's a very valuable tool in the negotiation no deal, will have the French and the Spanish fighting on the streets.

The real key issue around fishing is who controls the quotas on UK waters.  That MUST be the UK and the UK only.

Anyone who suddenly believes that there will be no more French and Spanish fishing boats in our waters is deluding themselves.  They will be allocated quotas - and part of the agreement will be their initial quota - which probably start similar to what they now have - will be renegotiated every year, two years - or whatever period is agreed.  The key is that it will be us who decides the quotas for our waters ......... rather than us having quotas imposed on us by the EU under their "Common Fisheries Policy".

In the longer term as we can build up our fleet, we can increase our quotas and reduce theirs, but it will never be a simple 'no foreign fishing boats in our waters' as from 31st December.

I didn't, I was hoping for some chips, egg and pineapple but was disappointed at the end 🤣

Best all day! Thanks! LOL!

Reminds me of a driver I had maybe twenty years ago now. We had gone to eat in the Drivers' Room in the P & O Dover or the Kent. He ordered gammon egg and chips (but no pineapple) but when it came called the waitress back and complained that he'd got ham and not gammon. To which he said to the huge amusement of everybody else messing there, when she asked him what the difference was, "Well...for a start....it's not spelled the same...."

What the remainiacs just can't seem to get their heads around is that most brexiteers don't care about short term market losses ect, we want our country back, fish might only be worth a small amount, but they're our fish in our waters and we currently have a foreign power dictating to us how much of our own fish we can have, while our UK fishmen have gone out of business, if they can't understand that its about being free as a self governing country, there's no point talking to them.

I have the same issue with the pheasants released next door. They keep coming my side of the fence so they are mine to shoot

I don't give a fig leaf about short term loss its the long term pain for UK plc that concerns me. Looking forward to the bit where we are a self governing state whatever that means. 🥱
