Vet bills

Recommended Posts

Just back from having one of my spaniels and lab receiving their annual booster jabs and glad I was sitting down when I settled the account.. Just over £45 each. That's a price rise from when we had another two done a couple of months ago. It's an excellent, sensible, mostly large animal / farm practice who we've been with for years who treat you like sensible owners who know their animals and not clueless 'pet parents' like some of the small animal practices do.

45 quid each though 😳

The costs are extortionate now. I had some anti-allergy tablets for my huntaway the other day. £145 with a very brief consultation. Return prescription for a second set at £82.

Had all my dogs Neutered. I was thinking maybe £120 each. Was close to £250 each. Obviously not done at the same time.

Part and parcel of pet ownership I know but Wowsers.

You are lucky it cost £45 each.

I took the young spaniel bitch and a GWP yesterday for their booster jabs and it cost me £73 each plus £24 prescription charge for Bravecto Flea tablets from Petdrugsonline.

The same booster 2 years ago was £35 each.

The vet doesn’t even scan the dogs microchip to check it is the correct dog, being submitted.

One of mine is booked in to be neutered in a couple of weeks, it will be interesting to compare costs.

Hello, my friend just had to pay a £1.200 vet bill this week

We have horses too and it’s surprising just how easy it is to rack up astronomical bills. Even with insurance cover they exclude bits that have been the subject of a previous claim.

I had a friend that was so besotted with her dogs and horses that when she maxed out on her animal insurance claims she would then use credit cards to cover costs finally re-mortgaging her property. I have not seen her for a few years so don’t know how she managed to get out of the debts. I think that you have to be sensible and realise when to draw the line.

Took my young GSP bitch to Northern Spain a couples weeks back to visit family. It's a high sand fly area so needed a treatment . Vet wanted £52 for one treatment. Found 3 online for £18.

Also needed a tape worm pill to come back. Spanish vet charged me €3 for the tablet and spent 20mins looking over the dog and filling in the paperwork.

I asked her how much they charge for flea and worming. They charge €80 a year and you get 2 check ups and all your parasite meds too. Seems they don't take the pics out of pet owners so much out there.

My vet (UK) offers a 'care' option; all anti parasite stuff (flea, lungworm and tick monthly, tapeworm 6 monthly ?, kennel cough (annually?)) and 4 x checkups a year, two vet, two vet nurse.  Check microchip and renew if failed.  10% off neutering surgery.  Nail clipping and anal gland are included, though I have not needed those.

£21 a month.

I also have veterinary insurance on top of that.

The veterinary practice I have attended for the past 12 years with the dogs was initially very good.

Since the 2 senior vet partners retired, the company was sold to one of the major veterinary practices.

The charges immediately increased, 2 years ago and the service decreased.

They have 3 people on the reception desk and numerous people walking around looking busy, and less customers in the waiting area.

They no longer offer a docking service, as they believe it’s cruel and unnecessary, and this service was provided by the 2 senior partners up until they retired.

The practice still operates under the original name and is in a rural location of St Clears .

I know I’m being ripped off, and seriously looking at going elsewhere with the dogs.

When I got my current dog in 2017 pets at home vets were doing a deal on vaccinations , pay £99.00 and get all vaccinations for the life of the dog for free

they stopped it pretty soon after worked out well for me though

We have recently switched vets from a group practice to a new independent place in town owned entirely by two vets. We were lucky to get in as the waiting list was huge and spaces were limited, mostly from people desperate to get away from the sky high prices and shoddy service at our old vets. Hopefully if they remain successful they will expand over time but so far they have been great. My advice would be to try and find another practice if you aren't happy, and make sure you tell them why you are leaving them if you manage to find a new place.

We also pay a monthly subscription which includes flea/worm treatment and 6 monthly checks with a vet, plus discounted bills for future services. The wife says its very reasonable (i dont really know, i just pay the bills) so it could be worth looking into something similar if available.

waste of money booster jabs never had them no worries thats my opinion

Always get the puppy ones then that's it , They offer you blood tests before the inoculate in case you dont need them but they cost as much as the inoculation

Many years ago we had three German Shepherds. Each had the original jab and annual boosters. I read that they only need one jab and further jabs were unnecessary and could actually cause epilepsy. A month or so after one booster, our middle dog became epileptic. When it had a fit, the youngest dog would attack it. When the middle dog recovered, it went and took lumps out of the younger. When we witnessed a fit, we kept them separate, but when we were out they just got on with it.

Over the years, it cost me a couple of thousand pounds in stitches and staples. I changed vets a couple of times as the vets tried to insist I got rid of one of them.

I took our bitch a few times when she appeared to have pulled a muscle. Every time, it ended up with an injection. I took her again and he said "I think we will just give her an injection". I said that on a previous occasion, a colleague had given her an injection for her collar being too tight. He expressed surprise, but didn't immediately recognise sarcasm. I told him it wouldn't be happening and we changed vets again.

A vet once told me that when a dog reaches a certain age they don't need boosters. I only had my  3 yr old rescue lurcher done because

it was part of the rescue deal. But i think if you put your dogs in kennels they insist on them being vaccinated.
