scolopax
I cannot stand the leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party, nor most of their cabinet and most of the MP’s. But this really is a nonsense story, a Labour peer gives assorted gifts to the elected Labour politicians, I believe all of which were subsequently declared , so what?!? I cannot see the issue. Starmer has taken £170k in freebies in the last few years and you don't see an issue, Jesus! You don't get owt for nowt! Nobody in the Private sector can take a gift of any kind without getting sacked, me included. The I have declared it so that makes it ok is utter garbage and many of them on the take haven't declared gifts properly. A Lord Ali employee was appointed head of the team to pick Labour MP's for the last election and one of Dale Vince's ally's was appointed to head a Govt climate change committee. The list could go on and on. Gifts are bribes pure and simple. Edited September 27 by Weihrauch17

The I have declared it so that makes it ok is utter garbage and many of them on the take haven't declared gifts properly. This. Before I retired, I had to follow both the USA's Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) as an employee of an American parent company and the UK's own Anti Bribery Act. Gifts were limited to very low value 'promotional items' and 'refreshments' for entertaining to modest cash values. It was rigourously applied and policed internally. I was even 'ticked off' for driving a departing overseas visitor to the railway station less than 2 miles away (it was cold and pouring with rain). The official line was that I should have called a taxi, for which the visitor was responsible for paying! UK guidance here; https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ssro-gifts-and-hospitality-policy/gifts-and-hospitality-policy From memory (it's been 8 years since I retired) under FCPA we were not allowed to give either 'gifts' or 'entertainment' exceeding USD 25 per individual per annum cumulative. E.g. one person could not be given more than USD 25 in thing like diary, calendar, pen gifts in a year, and not more than USD 25 on say meals. Accommodation and transport were not allowed at all unless there was a specific reason that there was no alternative. 7 hours ago, Weihrauch17 said: Gifts are bribes pure and simple. /\. This was the underlying driver for both FCPA and UK Anti Bribery Act.
TIGHTCHOKE
I will add that as the ever increasing list of Lord Alli's "payments" is revealed I really do not care for the Labour argument that it has ALL been declared. Clearly it hasn't ALL been declared. And just what did Lord Alli expect in return? We find he had an access pass for number 10, what else did he get? Horrible little man. Why was he so interested in the Assad regime in Syria? Far too many unanswered questions about him.

This ^^^ You don’t ‘gift’ away hundreds of thousands of pounds of glasses, clothes, accommodation or whatever without an expectation of something coming back your way be that a government contract, licence, permission or just a smoother ride. It’s embarrassing to watch the lefties trip over their own feet telling the world ‘it’s ok, don’t know what the fuss is about’. They know it’s not okay and it’s an embarrassment to them and their party - they’re not yet ready to admit it to themselves. Denying the colour of orange juice won’t change the fact it’s orange juice.

Flashman
Free tickets to stuff has always been an accepted part of an MP’s life. It’s a bit sad that Labour all went to see Taylor Swift, but they can’t help being proles… It’s the lying about taking money for clothes, the wife’s clothes, etc. that bugs me. Nobody thinks a posh frock is “office expenses,” and HMRC will punishment beat anybody - apart from an MP - that tries that excuse. So that’s a shoddy coverup by the party that made so much about Tory cronyism. Next, I have to wonder about all the personal gifts - holidays, flats, interest-free mortgage loans, etc. - made by one donor - Alli. The intimate nature of the gifts causes concern to me. Finally, does anybody think that’s the end of it? Labour haven’t disclosed any of this with any honesty, so it’s safe to assume there’s more to come now that the journos have finally turned their attention to Labour. And all that’s without the Starmer marriage gossip. He has a personal, vitriolic hatred of Boris, in part down to Boris’ inability to keep his flies zipped, so St. Starmer with love child will be huge. Mr. Merkel
I cut and pasted this from the Spectator, Liam Conlon MP maybe a good guy, but this is why accepting donations is wrong, he is a new MP but has already registered 44K in donations since July 2024 he has been corrupted by the system from day one, a 10K donation from Lord Alli was accepted to help with canvassing From The Spectator :- It seems that bad headlines run in Sue Gray’s family. After a week of newspaper reports suggesting that Keir Starmer’s chief of staff is to blame for the government’s ails, now it is the turn of her son to face the wrath of Fleet Street. Liam Conlon, who was elected last month as the MP for Beckenham and Penge, has quickly been earmarked as one to watch. Within days of his election, he was appointed as a parliamentary private secretary at the Department for Transport. Talk about a rapid rise: perhaps he knows someone at the top? Unfortunately for Conlon, his new appointment has landed him in a spot of bother with the Mail on Sunday. For the newspaper points out today that the ministerial aide accepted a £4,000 donation from Britain’s biggest train drivers’ union – just months before his department offered it an inflation-busting pay rise. On Friday the Aslef union announced a wave of fresh strikes – less than 48 hours after it was offered a pay deal that would boost the average driver’s salary by 14 per cent to £69,000. A few hours later, the first register of MPs’ interests for the new parliament was published, showing that the newly-elected MP had declared the £4,000 donation in his first ever entry. It is understood the donation was made to Conlon soon after he was selected as a Labour candidate for the constituency at the end of last year. Given his mother’s high profile, Steerpike suspects Conlon’s entries will be one to watch…
