I remember being at sea in the Royal Naval Reserve in the 80s . We were issued Navy gaspers on duty free and after a fortnight of smoking 40 of these a day, your voice sounded like you were walking up a gravel path!

Still it kept us awake! Canned the habit in 1990 and never touched one since...

Golden Virginia

Rothmans

Marlboro

In here was a brief period on some really bad Spanish things, now they really let you know you were smoking. (College trip to Spain, don't think it needs any more explanation). Actually went to the factory and was a little surprised to learn that the tobacco farmers were subsidised at the time.

B&H

Golden Virginia

Stopped a few years ago but I really did like it at the time, of course it was the devils work in the form of a woman that got me started in the first place.

Marlboro reds, then Lucky Strikes, then Marlboro Lights smoked from 86 to 97

Marlboro used to run some good competitions every year and if you saved foils you could get stuff - still got some nice bags.

One year i won the big competition - 2 tickets to america for 2 weeks, with $2000 spending money - had a fantastic time driving up the west coast on highway 101

smoked from 86 to 97, bloody hell, how old are you now :)

I started smoking at 13, gave up at 21, now 36 years old.

Started smoking my dads Marlboro reds

Then smoked my dads pipe.

Then B&H for ages.

Then Navy cigarettes from a mate in the Navy that didnt smoke - filterless.

Then JPS black

Then Rothmans

Then dabbled with other smoke - had a bong and could roll a fair old sizeable cone.

Then B&H for ages

Then Embassy

Then that particular avenue of enjoyment was closed by my wife. Best thing she has done for me.

Nearly smoked on Saturday night just gone. I can do that now and never go back to it. I feel soooo terrible the next day I smoke 2-3 a year maybe and never go back.

And to all those that say it stunts your growth...

When I was at high school in the early 70s the corner shops near the school used to sell single cigs out of a 20 pack we used to ask for a" separate " and a match .

Don't suppose there's much of that happening these days :)

They used to do at our local corner shop in the late 80's...Single's...1 fag and 2 matches so you could flip it at break time and re-light it at dinner....10p...

Cigarettes were a big part of life in the 70s. People smoked them in large numbers. They also started to kick the habit in large numbers too. To give up or not, and to inhale or not, were big topics of conversation.

In 1969, Embassy Filter was the most popular brand. It had been introduced in 1962 and took a staggering 24% of the cigarette market in 1968. By 1971 though, it was knocked off the top spot by Players No 6. In 1972 these brands (below) made up 94% of all cigarettes sold (in order of tar content, lowest first):

•Silk Cut (filter)

•Consulate Menthol (filter)

•Cadets (filter)

•Piccadilly De Luxe (filter)

•Cambridge (filter)

•Embassy Gold (filter)

•Embassy Regal (filter)

•Sovereign (filter............................ugh......ugh.......

•Sterling (filter)

•Player's No 6 Virginia (filter)

•Park Drive (filter)

•Kensitas (filter)

•Embassy (filter)

•Gold Leaf Virginia (filter)

•Player No 6 (plain)

•Player's Weights (plain)

•Albany (filter)

•Woodbine (plain)....................mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

•Player's No 10 Virginia (filter)

•Guards Tipped (filter)

•Benson & Hedges King Size (filter)

•Senior Service (plain)

•Player's Navy Cut (plain).............blow your head offf......

•Park Drive (plain)

•Rothman's King Size (filter)

Senior Service later Embassy and Woodbine,s when I was running out of money.!!

when my best mate/partner in crime and i started smoking in the early eighties,we smoked 'consulate'. Because they were menthol we were under the illusion that our parents would not cotton on that we'd been smoking because all we'd smell of would be mint! How very wrong we were

Nice one!

All sorts. Was in HMFs and while overseas every so often we were given what was confiscated by customs. A large cardboard box would be dumped in the crewroom and we'd all dive in. Passing Cloud, State Express, Russian Cocktail, etc, etc, you name it and they were there!

Cheers

Ooooh, this brings back some memories...

I think I started off smoking Silk Cut (I was young back then), but moved on to Marlboro Red when I got to Uni. When I started coughing up tar, I thought I should change to something a little less severe, so I swapped to Camel Lights, but then changed to Marlboro Lights in an effort to standardise my brand with the GF at the time.

I think I stuck with Marly Lights for the whole of the late 90s and early 00's and only changed to Marlboro Menthols when I met and fell in love with my now wife. Truth be told though, I'll smoke pretty much anything if push comes to shove and I take rolling baccy and papers out on exercise with me.
