FalconFN
Last month I found a very nice watch on a path so I took it to the local police station and was told that if it wasn't claimed within a month I could keep it. All ok so far, but then the officer on the desk then said that if I got to keep it I wouldn't legally own it as it would still belong to the original owner. I took his word for it at the time but then I re-checked with another officer who told me that I would be the legal owner. The month is up and I am now the owner of an Omega watch! It's a bit too 'bling' for me so I would like to sell it but I want to make sure I can sell it legally. Google searches don't show much and I want to know if: a. I can sell it b. I need to state that it was found If anyone knows about property law - what do you think?
BRAD1927
Flog it, its yours just the same as if you found £10,000 in £20 notes after a month its yours...... otherwise you couldn't spend your money

Newsportshooter
I thought it was three months before the old bill released it but hey ho - If youve taken reasonable steps to establish the owner and this has not been possible then legally you now own said item as it is in your possession and the original owner has relinquished ownership of it. You may struggle to sell it though, if it is indeed a real omega, as yo uhave no papers etc to prove authenticity or ownership. Good luck with it though at least you were honest enough to take it to the old bill. Just make sure you keep hold of the reciept they give you when you collect it. Ricko
Get in touch with Omega regarding serial number etc. If nothing else it would provide veracity of the watch being genuine.

FalconFN
What model is it Falcon? Ian. It's a Seamaster 120 m from the 90s with a quartz movement. I'm sure it's not a fake but I'll contact Omega to make sure anyway.

jgguinness
Very nice find. I have an Omega Seamaster, full size automatic. I've had it 10 years and it's never skipped a beat. Worn every day, and in some arduous conditions on the rigs etc. The wife has a Cindy Crawford Omega too, mother of pearl face with diamonds inset for the hours, again spot on. Great timepieces. What model is the one you found?? Jonathan

Asa Bear
When you contact Omega with the serial number, if it's genuine, I think they are duty bound to inform the insurance company. If it was subject to a claim that is.
JR1960
Nice find!! I've had my Omega Speedmaster since 1988 and still like it as much now as when I bought it. Don't know if this helps, it's from the CAB website. The word 'usually' in the last sentence is a bit unhelpful. Lost goods If you find goods that appear to be lost, then you can keep the goods as long as:- •you did not find the goods dishonestly or while trespassing •you take care of the goods •you did not find the goods on your employers’ property •the goods are lost, and not uncollected or abandoned, stolen or treasure •you have taken reasonable steps to find the owner of the goods, for example, left them to be claimed at a police station for a reasonable length of time •the goods were found not attached to anything on premises or land where the occupier does not exercise much control, for example, an air terminal lounge, public part of a shop, or recreation ground. What happens to goods handed over to the police The usual police practice is that you can have the goods back and keep them if they are not claimed within six weeks (six months in Northern Ireland). However, the police may want more time if there are special circumstances and they want to investigate, for example, if they suspect the goods are stolen or think that the owner can be traced. Once the property has been returned to you by the police, the original owner cannot usually then claim the goods.
Mungler
The only problem is if the watch you found was in fact stolen eg stolen in a burglary and dumped / dropped. Keep it. Then you don't have to worry about the owner coming forward.

Canis
OP- what a find ! don't count your chickens yet though - get someone who knows about these things to look at it though - An omega seamaster is a watch that any number of snide copies are produced, ranging in quality from obvious fake to hard to spot! best of luck with it ! Catweazle
Has anyone considered that a quick google by the original owner for a lost and found seamaster will probably flag this thread ? It might be prudent, although not very moral, to delete the thread.

bakerboy
You could place a poster near to where you found it, describe the watch and ask the owner/owner's to form a queue
