Today I took out the Jinx - how brave am I?

I last took out Steveyg in June on some spring rape. At the time he was very much a novice but he has 'put himself about' in the mean time and had shooting all over the place and done quite well from what I can gather. He has even changed his gun having been given strong instructions to do so from my 12 year old prodigy William.

Today we met with zero expectations. There are just too many tractors about to be sure of a decent shoot. I have watched fields for a couple of days only to be 'tractored off'. Very frustrating.

I gave steveyg four options. Option 1 was a newly sown field of winter wheat with some crows on it. Option 2 was an old wheat stubble. Option 3 was a barley stubble and option 4 was another barley stubble some distance away. In the end he chose option 3 and I went to option 4. There were no flight lines into either but we did put off getting on for 200 pigeons when we set up. Needless to say not many birds returned but he did get off the mark with some corvids and I shot 13 pigeons, none of which decoyed.

We upped sticks and went to options 1 and 2. Option 1 where I went was poor, option 2 where he went was better and I could hear shots in the distance so I packed up my hide and went to join him. Corvids not pigeons were the likely targets so a decent decoy pattern of shells and dead birds was put out. I have to admit at this stage that his shooting has improved greatly since the early summer and he did shoot dead some very good birds. He even claimed a double but I believe that I was looking in the opposite direction when that was supposed to have occurred.

We had a great hour and a half together and picked 40 corvids and 23 pigeons for a total of 63. Up to 15 were not recovered.

The pictures below are yours truly, steveyg doing his PC impression and the same man with his double! (Yes the sun shines out of his head).

I'm on a role.. 3 doubles in two outings..

Jdog pulled a couple of quality long range shots to nail a couple of pigeons..50/60 yds with 26gm size 6's..still can't get my head around the amount of lead required..

Crow bashing is totally different to pigeon shooting however with the right company it can be really enjoyable.

Sorry PC... Couldn't help myself..... :whistling: There is only one PC..!!!

The 425 is certainly starting to work however...some valuable input from certain pw members has greatly improved my shooting..cheers Jdog, pickerup (and his mate).Dirty Harry.Dando..top blokes :good:

Quality afternoon and finished it with a nice cold beer....it's not a bad life is it... Cheers Jdog

can I loose the jinx label now??

I love pigeon shooting...corvid shooting isn't bad either... :good: (Terry I know now why you keep getting up at silly o'clock.. )

Well done JDog and Steveyg a good result for a difficult day. The jinx is in your mind what you want is reaction shooting do not watch them into the pattern. Just , move , mount and shoot. Do not think about it just do it.

Some of our ancient shooters will remember my hero Richard Hearne aka " Mr Pastry" who had a stupendous moustache . I grew mine forty years ago to make me look older ? I think it's working now!!!!!!

Steve you have certainly put yourself about to try and improve your fieldcraft and come under a great amount of stick . That's what you need to do to shorten the learning process but you also need to make your own mistakes so you remember what works in different situations. Continue the process but remember to enjoy it , I look forward to further reports and of course the banter. But Steve in confidence does he have to wear those hats to cover a weird shape head or has he got shares in a hat shop in Broadway?????

Like Jdog ..the hat is unique

My Browning cap looks pitiful in comparison

You are spot on with the reaction shooting advice,Jdog highlighted this to me yesterday as well when I was hesitant at shooting incoming birds. I am still struggling with judging distance ..I will get there

cheers Lads,Great Forum :good:
