Oh about a 30" sphere at 55 yds!

Can be done, though you will sacrifice shorter range workable patterns. The biggest factor with steel is not long range patterns but retained velocity / energy, I find its more than possible to out pattern the longer range retained energy

I would imagine that steel shot is made out of a very low carbon type. like the steel used in electric motors and transformers laminations which is designed to hold little or no permanent magnetism. It is possible that any attempt to magnetise it would fail.

I'd have thought it would have to be pretty seriously magnetised to withstand the forces it will encounter once it leaves the muzzle enough to make a difference.

Would it though, every pellet will be travelling down the barrel, through the choke and out in to free air together at the same or very similar speed, with a little magnetisation they may stay together just a little longer.

The further north (or south) one fires the gun, the greater the acceleration of the magnetised shot as it travels towards, and is correspondingly attracted by,the magnetic poles.

Magnetised shot fired in an easterly or westerly direction would not travel in a straight line due to the above effect.

If your shot to stay together longer, less or no splits in the shotcup, no need to magnetise it

Have know knowledge of what magetising would do to the pattern , but doubt it would work unless the magnitism was very strong. Then a picture is forming in my mind of the pellets scattering with the force of the powder push , a pattern forming and once the energy declines the pellets all comming togeather in a ball.

Just joking , but worth thinking about.

If you are really that bothered about getting it to pattern at long range, invest in a suitable tight afterchoke.

Me, i'll stick with less choke and still break the long clays

Take a page out of "George Digweeds" book.....he's just about thegreatest clay shooter that there's ever been, and thats using ammo available to us all, he has no problems with 55yd crossers!!....most shooters havent got the skill to "out shoot" standard cartridges!!....you've got to ask yourself why others can do it with factory ammo and you/we cant?....answer= not good enough, dont waste time looking for the special cartridge, just use a pattern plate and practice and more practice, simple as that!

best wishes...Dale,
