fenboy
Had my first day on the peas this year today . It seems to have taken an age for them to get through but this last few days have seen them emerging. I was not expecting a great day as they really have not been through long enough but I had noticed a few birds had started to find them and as I have not had a decent shoot for a while I decided to give it ago . I was down the field at 11.30 and there was only about half a dozen pigeon spread across the field so it was not looking too promising . Anyway I determined to give it a go whatever so set up the hide and put 10 decoys out to start, the wind was very strong today and was blowing right to left so I set the decoys out in a random ish horseshoe pattern , I did not bother with gadgets today , I have always found decoys to be enough on very low / drilled crops. Once I was setup I popped the car into the farm yard and had a 10 min chat with the farmer, when I walked round the hedge to go back to the hide six pigeon got up out of my pattern ! nothing wrong with the pattern or hide then . I had not been in the hide long when the next bird came along and I was off the mark , as I was expecting things were very slow , but when a bird did come it usually decoyed text book style . I had long periods of nothing broken by little flurry's of birds, almost all singles, I only had one left and right today. With the birds decoying well I did not miss too many and ended the day on 33 for 39 shots plus a rabbit which was daft enough to run past my hide

JDog
A startling kills to cartridge ratio. The long period of inactivity did you no harm then.

fenboy
A startling kills to cartridge ratio. The long period of inactivity did you no harm then. I think the cartridge to kill ratio is more down to how well they decoyed than how well I shot , I did not have to shoot at any passing birds at all , anything that came across the field came into the decoys, if only it was always so ! Wilts#Dave
Nice bag there, enough to keep you going for the afternoon! I must agree with JDog's comment above too, don't think I've ever had a ratio of that for the amount of pigeons you shot and I consider myself a fair shot....great shooting mate

fenboy
I reckon your new chokes contributed to the kill ratio... Funny you should say that , for the first few shots I really struggled to swing on the bird , it was as though a invisible force field was trying to keep me from being on target , I whispered to the chokes " I am not steveyg " and then all seemed fine
