Out To Early

Recommended Posts

DB is off work this week so Monday saw us heading off at 10.00 to look for Pigeons, we drove around for a good two hours without seeing a single bird in the sky. We then picked up on a flight line across a deep valley and tried to pick it up on the other side when we were confronted with a flock of approx five hundred birds all travelling down the valley and landing in trees and a few setting for a Rape stubble field which we shot two weeks ago and is now green all over . We drove on the field to spook them and they just flew back up the valley the way they had come, so we followed to find the field that they had come off . After following to two miles we found the flock all around a rape stubble field . We checked the stubble and when you lifted the spent husks it was covered with seed. The field itself is about five acres on the edge of a " Yuppy" village with properties on three sides and a road on the fourth. So we sat there in total frustration , we thought of flagging it off but the birds were comming in to feed with us and the Disco in the field. We kept on looking and retraced our route back the way we came and saw a Farmer we know combining his wheat and stopped to have a chat . He told us he was having a problem on his wheat down the road as he had noticed the birds going in when he was picking up the bales on Sunday . We had looked at this field earlier in the day , no birds down . It was now 14.30 as we drove to it and yes the birds were on the Barley stubble . So we set up against a collection of bales in the field with the wind and sun off our backs . Standard set up two on the magnet , two angels and eight on spikes all thawed birds . We actually started shooting a 15.00 and stopped at 18.00 and picked up one hundred and fiftyfive birds. We had travelled ninety miles before we had found them. As we were picking up we checked the field edges and found approx two hundred birds just dumped , the smell was terrible and the flies all over the place. I do not understand why shooters go out to dump the bag as this will only give the antis more evidence to stop our sport. It was a great day in the end after loads of miles.

Another cracking day mate ! Do you just find the birds then ask the farmer or do you have permission on all this land ?? Ye and antis would love to find them pigeons !

Over twenty five years plus we have picked up a lot of land but we still have to ask at a lot of farms and others shooters have permission on them also. We have been requested to shoot on some land on recommendation from other Farmers. I started with one Farm and then tried next door when they had a problem, ask for one days shooting at first and thank them for the day after. Explain that you are static and shoot from a hide and always tell them that you are on the land in the future

Well done again PC + DB :good::good: Another cracking write up  Must said bud you both put a lot of work in to find your pigeons.

Your both deserve the great bags you get . Goes to show if you get off your butt there is plenty of shooting out there. I'm like you have gathered plenty of permissions over 40+ years.

Most as you have said been recommended by farmers that if helped out getting rid of vermin. Top job again PC ATVB Terry

You have fallen into the trap that most novice pigeon shooters fall into, including myself, of being too keen to get out there. At this time of year I only see lines developing from 1pm onwards. Have a lie in bed until lunch time then collect DB and shoot two hundred from 2pm to 6pm.

Pity about those rotting birds. Whilst it is distinctly ungentlemanly to 'dob' a fellow pigeon shooter in it a word in the farmer's ear may not go amiss. I did exactly that two years ago when I found dead birds, cartridges, crisp packets etc and I found myself with another decent acreage to shoot over and the culprit was banned from the farm.
