JABB
I don't have the HMR. You guys suggest swapping the .22 for a HMR cert permitting?
pistolgrip
Having only shot a friends 17 hmr for the first time a week ago and shot a friends .22 lr for a few years I can honesly say what a cracking little round I don't personnaly hold a fac but have been toying with the idea for ages, having the finance for only one outfit I would choose the 17 it takes all the thinking out it no rick's, dead flat, 223 quick and not as much damage to the rabbit as I expected' but still one hellova whack' I wouldn't think of head shooting a fox at 100 yrds with a .22lr no matter what velocity round I was using but with the 17 it's gonner realy opened my eyes good things do come in small packages
malkiserow
I don't have the HMR. You guys suggest swapping the .22 for a HMR cert permitting? Really, don't do that, do add a .17 hmr to your collection..... I have both and they have different jobs for me.
colin lad
for me it would be the .22lr i have a hmr and .222 but my go to gun is the lr love it and you still need some stalking and field craft to get close enough where as the hmr and triple you can sit up and cover whole fields which is fine when it's pest control. i also have some low power .22 rounds great for up to air rifle range's, got into the habit of only taking hmr and triple out and i felt i was loosing some field craft as it was getting too easy, also like the 410 hushpower great for wondering about and not a problem if your near buildings for noise colin

I have both and they have different jobs for me. seconded. the .22 is perfect for lamping and the 17 for day time and dawn walks and stalks, especially if you think a fox might be about

No gun shoots flat let alone dead flat and 2. Hmr 2550 fps a .223 3300+ fps so nearly 1000 fps different just an observation Colin sorry 3 points 3. You do still get ricks Edited September 10, 2014 by colin lad
WelshMike
I sold my .22lr after I bought my .17hmr. As with most things both have advantages and disadvantages. Much nosier then a .22 but flatter shooting, higher velocity and (in my opinion) a better tool for pest control. My advice is to keep hold of the .22lr, get a .17 hmr and make up your own mind. malkiserow
What would your gun of choice be for a casual evening walk about looking for rabbits? I think much depends on your shooting style and topography. Do you want to walk fast and shoot springing rabbits? Use as shotgun and maybe a modded one Do you walk slowly and almost stalk them in areas where you can get into 50 ish Metres? Use a .22lr Do you shot in open ground where you need to take longish shots on rabbits? Use a .17HMR Horses for courses.........
welshwarrior
Depends on the ground some areas all close in 410 Other lots if hedgerows but larger fields 12 bore Open spaces shy rabbits 22 Best of both the top 2 28 bore. HMR is useful but I will always have at least 1 22 in my cabinet.
bluesj
17 hmr for me 1 reason is its much lighter than my .22 I don't have the HMR. You guys suggest swapping the .22 for a HMR cert permitting? If I can only have one gun I would stick with the .22 mine gets a lot more use than the

Use a .22lr Or you could REALLY learn to stalk rabbits, and get to 25 -30 yards and use the (bolt action) .410 Do you shot in open ground where you need to take longish shots on rabbits? Alycidon
22LR semi is a lovely tool for rabbits at below about 70 yards with subbies. Any further and I would be looking at my 17AH although I used to kill rabbits at up to about 90 yards using an Annie 1712 bolt action. Tollerman
Got to be my old 12 bore hammer gun.Hundred years old but still shoots straight .Ideal for that late pigeon flying into the woods at dusk or rabbit feeding under the hedgerow.Gives the feeling of time stood still. kent
.410 OU 3" I voted .22 because this option wasn't available. A walk with a .22 isn't a walk its a stalk of course, if it was truly walk it would be the .
