A new six part series starts this Thursday (2/10) at 10 pm.

Detectorists follows the relationship between two friends who share a passion for metal detecting.

Cast looks pretty good. Written by Mackenzie Crook who also has the lead part.

I've been disturbed twice recently by folk using metal detectors while out shooting pigeons, so this might be an interesting insight as to what they are like!

Hopefully it will be worth watching and funny even.

He also directed it (Mackenzie Crook) so at least if it's bad there's only one person to blame - he is actually a detectorist in the real world so at least he didn't just pick something that seemed funny.

BBC4 not the best outlet though, suggests Auntie feel it's only going to chime with an older audience of culture vultures

Shoot em, they give us descent detectorist a bad name,

I was quite surprised by the way that they have handled the subject not at all making fun of the people who do it I was listening to an interview with Mackenzie Crook on radio 5 he said he has been doing it himself for some time and has some quite expensive equipment he also owns a stretch of woodland with a bridle path running through it that he uses his detector on but to date has not found much I for one enjoyed the program and had a few good laughs as well.

Your right there price wise the deus he was using is about £1300 and the one the other guy was using a minelab nearly £2000. I enjoyed it never had a young lady come up to me when out detecting. I was never realy into history at school, but detecting gets you that way. You start to learn about the bronze age and how did man first start to melt metal, how did they know if you crushed a rock you could get ore from it. Then when they found coal they could start on iron, because of the higher temps it would go to. This was all around the time of the celts. Then about 40AD comes the romans and they stay with us for about 400 years. When they leave we go into the darkages.

There was very little coinage before the romans came. People would barter for stuff, the celts did have some coinage but not a lot.

After the romans left.

around 800, we did start to see coins these were called " hammered" how they got there names was because a couple of dies were made a top and a bottom, you placed a piece of silver or gold and hit it with a HAMMER.

They would not be totaly round but would have extra silver around the edge, people would clip these little bits of and keep them to sell on as scrap silver, if you were caught of came your head. Then milled coins were introduced to stop this. Like you see around the edge of our rubbish coins of today made from a lot of iron not pure copper.

So yes were are maybe anoracks but in an interesting way.

My best find todate is a 3600 year old bronze age spearhead. When i first picked it up it makes you feel special as the last person to use it was all them years ago. It had laid in the ground all them years and was still in one piece.

Now that's an amazing find. I've a collection of flint arrow heads found in a river the same thoughts spun through my mind.

The program good start .

John.

They are beautiful, have never found one, i did find a round scraper one when out detecting.

That part of the river must have been realy special. I would go back there maybe there is more offering they have placed there.

  • 1 month later...

I used to work with the chap on the right, his name is Paul Macartney, he's an actor (Has a different surname for a stage name) and if you remember the old churchill ad's he was in the car driving whilst talking to the nodding dog a few times and does other bits, but in his spare time used to be a sales temp for me on my conferences. Nice chap.

So any opinions on the series? I was about to start a new thread but found this one.

I've just downloaded and watched all of them over 2 days and I have to say I absolutely loved it.

Everything about it is brilliant, even the opening music. Looking forward to series 2.

I thought it were really good and refreshing to have a comedy without canned laughter. I hope the Beeb make another series.
