treetree
Was out this morning, had a shot, went to reload putting a new cartridge in the barrel that was just used. Closed the gun and bang! Left me a little bit shocked. Luckily I was being safe and it discharged into the ground (still have all 10 toes). What could have caused this. To my knowledge my finger was not near the trigger. Is it likely to happen again? Do I need to go to a gunsmith? Gun is a 1970s double trigger sbs. Grateful for any help Edited December 22, 2014 by treetree
webber
Have the gun examined by a competant gun smith before you use the gun again. webber
malkiserow
I'd say "off to a gunsmith" soonest and before you use it again. Has it been serviced of late?
wymberley
Yes you do, and before you use it again. It sounds very much as though the sear is worn. I would imagine it is not fitted with interceptor sears. Oops, I type too slowly, beaten to it
johnphilip
also have a look at the rest of the box of cartridges are any of the primers not seated right.
Cyrus1988
Get it down to the gun smiths, better safe than sorry.

nighteye
same thing happened to me at the clays yesterday , gunsmith said sears or trigger might need replaced , the safety was the only thing stopping the gun from firing ! Ship it off to a competent gunsmith
Jaymo
Have seen this with a raised primer and a quick closure of the action

treetree
Many thanks for all the replies. Have followed the general message and got it to a gunsmith. Left it with him to sort out. Gutted as was just finding my feet (almost literally with the left hand barrel this morning!) and have 2 weeks off from work in which I planned to get out as much as possible. Thanks again for the advice

Thanks again for the advice If terminal treat yourself to an early Christmas pressy, if not but going to take a while to sort ask the gunsmith if he has something you can borrow for a few days while he sorts yours out. mossberg-operator
Buy another one! You can't have enough guns...
treetree
Well I was just thinking about a new one and looking online. Don't think I can handle the trauma of buying second hand again. Baikal any good as a new purchase? Not fussed about badge and name or fine engravings. Just want reliable and long lasting. Mike737
A mate of mine had this happen many, many (ooh, Police Academy!) years ago. The particular embarrassment was that he was a police firearms officer, and it happened in the entranceway to Hull(?) prison... Fortunately no-one was injured, but forensics were unable to repeat the fault, so it went down as N.D., and that was the end of his AFO. The gun in question was a Viking SxS. Mike. scotslad
It happened once on my wee shoot before i joined, the boy it happened to always had decent guns. What exactly was he doing or intending to do with a loaded firearm in Hull HMP??? Are you a Cossack? Plenty of guns about for sensible money, a new baikal will last for ever but unless it fits you, your better off with a catapult... Especially on resale! Mike737
Escorting a Category 'A' prisoner, along with other armed officers. Seems he was a bigger risk than the prisoner though... Mike
pigeon controller
I had it happen two years ago, stuck firing pin, used my spare gun for the rest of the day. Replaced return springs never happened again.
