Frost Walk With The Wee Dug,And Some Crossbill Pics.

Minus 5 this morning and perfect day for a walk with the gun and dug.Only took the young fella with Rab being deaf so he had a lot of work to do but was spot on.

Only had went 50 yards when a covey of frenchies rose well out but swung round giving me a shot at a single that was a wee bit closer than the rest.Had to swing well in front and on the shot he crumpled which was a satisfying result.

Once again from then on it was a regular show of a bird or two including around a dozen snipe that have started using the ditch with everything else all rock solid and a couple of woodcock.

Had a sequence of 5 birds in a row,all relatively easy shots, which resulted in misses and havent a clue what i was doing wrong but did get back on track after that.

Highlight was a cock runner that i decked in the open around 40 yards which made it into cover, and by the time Jake was on the scent the pheasant must have put a lot of distance between us but i thought Jake was on the wrong track when he followed the fenceline and carried on around 250 yards to the wood.Left him a few minutes and right enough he appeared with the cock which again was satifying. He hardly puts a foot wrong now although he hasnt got the engine Rab has/had.

Ended up with 8 pheasants,2 frenchies,1 woodcock and a gamebag that weighed a ton,and a very enjoyable day.

Also saw dozens of crossbills attacking the pine cones but unless im mistaken i think they were all hens which i found strange.Keech camera so the pics are nay to some standards but did manage a few of them.

Cheers all.Plenty of cones up this way but we dont seem to have a lack of anytime really.Hopefully be there tomorrow and will see if the crossbills are still cutting about. The cocks are a very colourful bird and would be fine to get a few pics if there are any.

Nice day out. Jake is a cracking looking dog. Have you saw many woodcock recently, poor season for me on the cocks.

Flushed 4 yesterday Ollie but only got the shot at one and thats the most ive seen this season.Very poor and even with this hard weather the usual good bits are lacking but woodcock can be like that.
