Decoy Shy

Recommended Posts

Picked up DB at 09.00 and he informed me that a Farmer had phoned saying Thousands of Pigeon on the rape. Now this field has had a fair bit of hammer over the passed month and I even watched a shooter on it Tuesday which was quiet an education as he had positioned himself on a comfortable position on the edge of the field with his flapper , floater and decoys all the wrong way to wind. I watched him for approx an hour and he had shots at birds who were flying over his decoys not able to land with the strong wind. We arrived at the rape only to find the gate locked so we phoned the Farmer to pick up the key , Its in my Disco and thats been left at the pub by my son last night, So we picked up the Disco key drove to the pub ,drove the farmers Disco back to the farm and obtained the key. All this time we had a constant heavy drizzle which was soaking everything. We drove to the rape and watched it for twenty minutes sorted out the line to the field and set up. Birds would approach the set up and flare, we changed it around and eventually they started to show interest and came within range. We had set up at approx 12.00 and shot till 18.00 and picked up ninetyfour pigeons and became very wet on the return to the Disco.

Today the same start time and started to look for drilling to shoot we checked out over twelve fields with no birds present so we started to look at the growing rape which by now is very tall in places. We watched them play follow the leader into a field, spooked them and they just lifted off in one solid mass back to the trees. We found one field which had a few down and others joining and set up they were very spooky of the decoys and alot flared off . After an hour we had six birds , so we moved on to another rape field and set up again it was now 14.00 and we shot it till 17.45 and picked up a total for the day of fifty six birds which was a small percentage of the birds showing interest in the decoys but like before flared as the low area we could decoy was very small and tight.

Still achieving good results I see. Well done.

Yes you will both be missing your shooting companion and will do for some time yet I imagine.

Have you shot any on drillings this time?

I shot on beans last Saturday from an invite from Bunny Blaster, that's the only time this year. We've have sixty acres of beans to go in this week .

Nice write up again PC.

People new to decoying pigeons need to take note of the detail in your posts to understand what goes into a successful days shooting.

It's easy to sit back and think certain people are blessed with golden permissions which always produce; the ability to spot where, when and how to set up is probably the hardest part to master, even more so than shooting in my opinion.

PC is a regular poster on here and though I have never met him, I doubt he has any reason to lie about a day's shooting!

If you care to look more carefully you will see the ground is wet, as are PC's trousers stained with mud.

If' you've made an honest mistake then that's fine, otherwise try to refrain from comments like this, I've seen plenty of good guys stop posting on here after comments like this and the only loser is the forum.
