Konnie
Hyundai santa fe, if you come across one large and good mpg for size, large boot space.

figgy
X Trail Diesel or Honda CRV for daily driver. The Suzuki Vitara is also a good option.
Glenlivet
Hyundai santa fe, if you come across one large and good mpg for size, large boot space. Got a 52 with less than 60,000 on the clock for £2000. Great car and very comfortable, went over to Germany in it last year. Use it as wife's/family car. Thirstier and more basic (auto) gearbox than the Freelander which I use as shooting wagon/my car. colin lad
Out of the 3 I have had vitara, crv,Daihatsu I would say vitara for that money Had my one for 10 years no probs, got crv at moment nicer on road drive but not as good off road, Daihatsu best off road but worse on road Colin
TONY R
I guess X trail diesel out of the smaller SUVs but if i was on that tight a budget i would be looking for an older tougher built workhorse, and looking at a 2.7 Teranno diesel or a Daihatsu fourtrak 2.8 , if you had a bit more money a early hilux d4d but dont think you will get a good one for 3 k. a very tidy Teranno or fourtrak and bank your change. malkiserow
I had a couple of mechanics now say that the Freelander 2 is good if heavy towing and serious off road work is not required .... perhaps any owners of them might comment

Fuji Shooter
LR Series 3 - at least it will go up in value and it is easy to fix
motty
I suppose it depends on what you will use the truck for. A lot of trucks don't have enough boot space for all of my pigeon gear etc. That's why I own a Surf. My next truck will most likely be a pick up. Konnie
lot bigger than a freelander inside, so would tolerate a bit less mpg
kie1981
Personally I have a subaru outback it's very comfortable has loads of interior space plus it is more than capable off road

dodeer
Terrano are good trucks. I'd probably go for a Subaru Forestor. 2lt petrol, auto box.

drone
Kia sorento, better than the 2a lr off road hi 20s mpg in diesel lovely everyday drive. I've had mine since new it's now 120000 miles old and the biggest expense has been punctured tyres. 3 grand should get you a good one. Just check the rear suspension crosstubes for corrosion on early models, there was a recall to rustproof them. Another problem with early (pre 06) models was flaking of the lining of the fuel tank, this caused problems with the engine sensors. Fix is to clean the pick up filter in the tank, a 10 minute job with a screwdriver but do it when the tank is nearly empty as diesel stinks on your hands. I just washed mine under running water and let it drain off for an hour or so on some kitchen roll. The manual is free on line but you'll have to google hard. ferguson_tom
Another vote for the sorento mine is 52 plate with 85000 miles, we bought it couple of years ago with 60000 and it's been a great motor. My wife uses it as her daily car and finds it easy to drive, it tows our big twin axle caravan all over the country with ease. My auto is a tad juicy I get mid to low 20s mpg but I don't hang about. Also they are a very easy car to work on as have plenty of room around everything and nothing is complicated all simple well engineering mechanics, not that I get under it much in last 3 years apart from the fuel tank it's had couple of services, New d link bushes and an anti roll bar link....thats it. Drone if the fuel tank problem happens again call up your local dealer they replaced my tank completley FOC and did the rear brackets at the same time. Westley
Having owned :- X Trail, Roomy, economical, 2.2.diesel gave me 40 plus mpg. flat floor with seats down. reasonable off road. 4 seats with dog box in. Vitara. Lot less roomy, nippy, economical 40mpg from 1.9 diesel, **** main dealer service and Suzuki did not want to know, non flat floor (had to make platform for dog box) brilliant off road with low range box too. No boot space with rear seat up, basically a 2 seater when dogs in. CRV. No flat floor on 2008 to 2012 models, rear door sill stops dog box door opening, 36 mpg 2.0 petrol auto, good boot space, will take guns across boot, (unlike Freelander, Suzuki, Kuga, X3, Q3 ) Very reliable, just do not leave electrics on with engine off. Battery too small ! Reasonable off road, not been stuck yet. Now on 2nd CRV Edited March 1, 2016 by Westley
