The Lab from last year would be hard pressed to last beyond the first drive , let alone a whole day retrieving , and the only way that's going over a fence is if someone provides a ladder ...beggars belief that is supposed to be the breed standard for a Labrador retriever ..

The KC has been the ruination of some very good gun dog breeds - Whatever happened to the Labrador who now look like whippets and cockers, well enough said!

If you are looking at labs like that I think they should be doing selective breeding which they should be doing anyway to get s good sound Gun dog.so god know what you are looking for

No I would not go out of principle the way they breed some dogs to please the human eye not for the good of the dogs.

Totally agree with the above but think the problem with lightly built labs lies firmly with the field trial fraternity and their desire for speed and style.

Went to crufts last year, not the gun dog day, the Saturday as this was the day I could make. Anyway taking out trying to change the world, I really enjoyed the DAY, being able to look at all the different breeds of dog, that have nothing to do with shooting. And there are a lot of other stalls to look around. I own a big boned Labrador and a racing snake one both from the same lines which I had a hand in the breeding, they have good coats because they live outdoors not through breeding.

So Penelope if you fancy a decent day mooching about with dogs in mind go.

But if you have bred the perfect dog yourself like some on here, I wouldn't bother.

That is nothing to do with the KC , it more to do with the trialling fraternity wanting sleek fast dogs

I shall be going G. The GF wants to go and has never been before. I have been twice, many years ago when it was at Earl's Court. I'm more interested in the BASC sponsored Gamekeepers show, and the gundog displays rather than the breed type showing.

Look at German shepherds with sloped backs... Doesn't do them good! The English bull terrier never used to have a long nose and they've ruined that one as well...

The sloped backs causes hip problems and the breedesr turn out docile dogs suited to the show ring, not the breed's original purpose. A dog that allows a judge to examine its knackers isn't going to be much use on a Friday night in Rotherham town centre. It had got to the point where my old firm was importing over one third of its GSDs from Eastern Europe.

I have 2, ones 50kg and is nearly 2 years old. Big mum and dad. Personal protection and guard dog as much as a family dog. Littleun is 7 months, white sable and weighs in at 24kg. Fair size for a bitch :) both with STRAIGHT backs.

That comment had me in creases but fair point. Worthy of James Herriot
