For the money you can't beat Ridgline smocks few places have them in the sales for around £70.00 I paid a bit more from Lakeland toys and Hobbies but I'm very happy with it. The back is long enough to sit on.

If it's warm when your out and about I'd carry a ex mod poncho in a pack.

Have a look at the Percussion range of clothing, not bad for the price.

I got a nice jacket and trousers to match for just over £100 from a local game fair last year.

Smart enough for a formal day and waterproof.

This is the ebay site they have!

I know what you mean about seeing / touching the stuff but this company does do the fairs all over.

Sherwood Forest : GADWALL.

Cracking warm,windproof coat..Love it..

I've had one of these for around eight years not worn it for last six never had cold enough winters.Far to warm for me if walking around. Very good coat though and I won't part with it.

Problem I find with some jackets is that although they're waterproof via the liner/membrane, in heavy rain the outer fabric absorb a lot of water making the coat heavy and lose it's thermal properties. Had this with Deerhunter Smallville and Hogg of Fife Sportsman jacket. Reading this post with interest.

Yep, I've been there. Had a 'waterproof' tweed-type shooting jacket that basically acted large flannel with a water resistant liner inside. Not only does it become extremely heavy and cold, the fabric outer prevents water from running off the liner so it speeds up the failure of the membrane. Not going down that route again. I want a waterproof that is waterproof first and foremost. I love my old Barbour Beaufort when it is first re-waxed because it sheds water quickly and doesn't get too heavy. I also love the big pockets, particularly the rear game pocket because I can fit in loads of dummies, leads, balls etc when I'm training the dog and I don't have to carry a separate bag. Only problem is it needs re-waxing very regularly now and I'd like to get something similar in a more resilient material for very wet weather. The Barbour will still be my 'go to' choice when the weather's a bit more clement because it fits like only an old Barbour can.

I'm really struggling to find something the fits the bill so I'm very grateful for all the suggestions and advice so far.

Have you looked at (or heard of) the Bonart range.

I have the below (The Marten) and I love it, waterproof and breathable, light to wear and plenty of pockets (including game pocket).. a light jacket but I prefer to layer up rather that have a jacket I'm sweating under. Nice enough to pop into town without looking too mercenary! but practical enough to shoot in

Well, I'd rather not spend more than about £150 if possible. But if a £150 coat is only going to last two seasons and a £350 coat will last ten I know which one I'd think was more affordable!

If you are happy spending that money then most of the stuff will last a decent time if looked after.

Have used Ridgeline for probably close to 6-8 years and pretty faultless although they can be a wee bit sweaty.Their smocks are superb, hard wearing and pretty good value for money.

If you are looking at that money some of the Harkila range is accessible which again jacket ways theres not much that goes wrong with them.

Nice piece of kit, my one problem with smocks is taking them off when they are wet or muddy, pulling them over my head I do not like I end up doing a strange dance around the landrover.

Thanks Andra. Ordered pigtail from optics warehouse eBay store. Arrived next day so excellent service. First impressions are good although it's yet to see the rain. I'm a 42" and the XL is good fit with a jumper underneath. Wanted it for the milder weather.

Cheers, just got one of these. Had it's first drenching today and kept me warm and dry. The plan is get a gore-tex winter coat before the start of next season but this one will (hopefully) see me through the summer and autumn until then.

Waterproof smock. It's a Ridgeline 'copy' and currently £99.95 delivered. I'm a shepherd by day, and have been putting it through its paces outdoor lambing since I got it. Bloody brilliant so far!! I bought a Medium, with hindsight I would've bought a Large, but it fits brilliant once on - just getting it on has a knack. Taking off is really easy! I wear a fleece jacket under it for warmth when out on ATV...

I have a Ridgeline Pintail Smock - they really are good, but for the Enduro or Monsoon smocks - I couldn't bring myself to spend to £200+ so this seemed a good compromise.

I love my Rivers West field-pro smock, had it 4+ years and still 100% waterproof. Some people think they make you too hot but I've always found if i layer up correctly I never overheat unless doing excessive walking.

My Rivers West jacket leaked in one sleeve the first time it rained, got a new one in exchange which has been OK.

Yeah your right....

The Ridgeline which that is copying, iv just found for £170... Deffo way under £100. Still - £100 is more then enough to be paying IMO.

The Pintail (selling for £50 currently IIRC) is lightweight in comparison, and can not be compared. Should know - I have it.
