Wingman
Spent the last couple of weeks restoring the stock and forend on my 1930's Auto-5 and finally got it finished and back together. My efforts have uncovered a lovely figured walnut stock under years of dirt and grime which according to the Browning US forums is a French walnut one that was apparently special order with the pistol grip. Well pleased with the results !
ditchman
some people think that the browning auto is the most ugliest gun ever made..................i have a very very soft spot for them....i have never fired one or touched one...but would love to own and use one............................. Wingman
I agree it's a bit of a Marmite gun either love them or hate them. It's old and heavy but I have to admit it shoots great I am really pleased to have one in the cabinet. Go on Ditchman treat yourself wabbitbosher has a 12G one for sale on here at the moment! panoma1
I had an acier special 12b model years ago, old, dog rough and you could hear the "clunk" of the slow motion cycling Which I quite liked when I had gotten used to it!.............It never missed a beat! These old classics need preserving by appreciative owners who are prepared to restore them....well done!
Badf1shman
The colours came out lovely! Did you go with the boiled linseed?
Wingman
The colours came out lovely! Did you go with the boiled linseed? No decided to use some tung oil I had in the garage. Don't think it would have made a huge difference though!
CaptainBeaky
I never expected to say this about an A5, but that looks really nice. You may be converting me to the charms of long recoil antiques... Oh and there's nowt wrong with tung oil Edited June 4, 2016 by CaptainBeaky

wraivi
Nice job Wingman, that has really given the gun a new lease of life. That wood figuring is sweet As! One has to wonder how many other beauties are out there covered in years of grime.
Wingman
Yes indeed mate she looks superb now! The wood has come up a treat and I am glad I left it as it without staining. I just need to get out and shoot it now unfortunately events have conspired against me since I came up to see you but I am out today, will let you know how it goes! Scully
That looks a very nice gun. I've always liked the look of the original A5 and there is a stunning example in Skipto Gun Room, but I'd have to sell something to make room for it, and have nothing I want to sell. A good job. Well done.

Scully
hello, looks like that A5 is sold and from what i have been reading on the new A5s the older ones are more reliable, Never mind; it wasn't really viable without selling something, but thanks anyhow. Haven't heard much about the new A5's, so I'm assuming they're not selling too well. They've spoiled the look in my opinion and again in my opinion, if they'd wanted to sell A5's they could have just brought out a modern machined gun with exactly the same looks as the original...i'm pretty sure a stainless model would have appeal as well as a blued version, and a case hardened model would be stunning. If a model is desirable then why change the look of it?

johnphilip
Years ago a nice piece of wood came as standard on a gun. Now you have to pay a fortune for one.
Wingman
The new A5 isn't the same you may as well by a benelli as it's not the same long recoil system as the original. I would stick to the old types and by an M2 if you want to go modern but I have been seriously lusting after this!! http://country-pursuits-rickmansworth.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=93&products_id=920&osCsid=11ubmakd4euihkmcqn9t5l8dp4

saddler
would the multi choke be original...I suspect not. You'd be wrong then. Made by Miroku so removable choke fitted as were most latterday A5s
B25Modelman
Ahhh a Miroku model. Not a real A5 then.

Lord Geordie
I had 2 A5s about ten year ago! Nice to shoot, but very different in looks to the modern auto. They were very well built. I also liked the Franchi AL48 I owned! Lovely woodwork on that A5 btw
