Elmer Fudd.
My other half has a 56 plate 2.0L petrol. Starts 1st time every time, has passed every MOT without any adviseries. Gets main dealer service once a year which is cheaper than the local independant. Not the most economical of cars, (she gets around 32 mpg with a heavy right boot), but so far totally reliable. Can't fault it.
jam1e
Looking at an old one for shooting , any had one? Or they just guff. Cheers Not had one myself, but a shooting friend has one, It seemed ok on moderate surfaces, (From my little experience of them) It managed quite a steep incline on a water sodden furrowed grass field with total ease. I think it's a petrol.... I did a lot of research on the X-Trail, and CRV, as i couldn't make my mind up, between the two. I also watched lots of you-tube videos of the off road ability of the Honda CRV, and the Nissan X-Trail. Both seemed pretty good off road, although the best results i saw, came from vehicles with the right tyres for off roading. I've just bought a 55 plate X-Trail SVE 2.2 DCI. So far, i'm chuffed to bits with it. I only went for the X-Trail, as it was being sold by a friend, who has had it from new, with 93k on the clock, and well looked after, regarding servicing, and has never been off road at all. (Is that a good thing...) I was very surprised at how quick it is was through the gears, and bag loads of torque! Just to add, i'm yet to take it off road yet, So I can't say first hand yet how well it does on road tyres at this moment in time.... I believe both are great light off road vehicles. Westley
I am on my second one and never managed to get stuck....................yet ! It was quite amusing on one occasion, picking my way between the stuck Rangies on a very muddy stubble field. A combination of low profile tyres and driver error, caused chaos and only 4 from 8 guns arrived at the next drive ! (I was one of the 4 and so was my passenger). The other vehicle that made it was a series 1 rag top, which had the elevenses on board.

Twistedsanity
I have a brand new one petrol auto, if you don't want to beat your new.car to death everytime you come to a hill get the diesel, I'm.getting low 30's mpg driving sensibly whereas the oil.burning version sees mid 40's mpg, mines going back and being replaced with the oil burner

Sprucey
Had one in the family since new 20 years ago. Was my grandfathers who treated it like a Bentley.. so with proper maintenance they last forever (only a small bubble of rust on the rear quarter. It's the 2.0L Petrol so a little thirsty but........ Like said above, I have never got stuck. I have even scaled Long mynd in it. Tyres are everything though. What is handy is the foldup pick-nic table in the boot. Adge Cutler
I had a 2.2 TDCI 06 plate for 3 years. A senior Ford Design Engineer once told me the diesel engine is the best ever developed.! That's some endorsement from a rival. They are surprisingly quick with bags of torque and I regularly got 42 to the gallon out of mine. I had all weather tyres fitted and although the 4x4 system is on demand its pretty good on everything other than ground which would stop most 4 x 4's anyway. Its one of the best two cars I've ever owned. Had one in the family since new 20 years ago. ferguson_tom
My step mum had a y-reg one since around 2009 it is now with my brother with 190,000 miles on the clock. In all that time all its needed is regular servicing and a new radiator. You would never guess it has that mileage for both its condition and the way it drives. Considering my step mum treats a car like a mobile skip and has as much mechanical of sympathy as a sledgehammer it's a real testimony to Honda. It's the 2.0 petrol so only criticism is its thirsty, off road it's never got stuck on even the wettest of steam rally fields.
IEH
I've had a petrol auto for around 14 years now. In all that time it's only required servicing and normal wear and tear replacements. 27/28 mpg is about average and it gets me most places, ground clearance is the limiting factor off-road. wymberley
Don't know now how old they have to be to have the panoramic sun roof. The one advantage they had over the X Trail was having no transmission tunnel. Either way, two damned good mobile semi high seats.
johnnytheboy
I have a petrol manual 2003, perfectly good old buses If they haven't been serviced the suffer from worn cam followers, and rear diffs were factory fitted with the wrong oil, that should be swapped out, it's the only two thing that go wrong surprisingly! mr smith
I had a gen 1 jap import a few years back, the combination of flat floor no gear stick (column mounted auto) and a sun roof made a pretty decent shooting truck,it got me in and out of places I probably shouldn't have. Now got a 2004 gen 2 without the sun roof and with manual gearbox which I enjoy driving other than the low 20's mpg. activeviii
Just about to reject one. To many little faults. 3 main problems with them. Tappets, drive shaft and rear diff. All common faults. Only the drive shaft being the expensive fix. At about 40 mph it feels like your driving over rumble strips. Other thani would have another.
