Gordon R
The character of Manuel was allegedly based on a waiter called Miguel, who worked at Dormy House Sunningdale . John Cleese did a number of corporate videos based there. I had the pleasure of meeting Miguel, who was aware of the rumour and played up to it. Both very funny men. Mungler
Apparently Andrew Sachs only regret in life was not punching Jonathan Ross in the face (seriously). Amen to that.

sako751sg
Shame for many he will be remembered for the Russell Brand/Jonathan Ross debacle A sad loss. Dont really think thats correct. The 2 mentioned may be remembered for the incident but Sachs will be remembered for comedy genius and an outstanding voiceover and humble man. Gordon R
sako - I believe you are correct, but LondonLuke has a point. Unfortunately, people also remember his name in connection with two people, whose only talent is abuse.
Sian
The character of Manuel was allegedly based on a waiter called Miguel, who worked at Dormy House Sunningdale . John Cleese did a number of corporate videos based there. I had the pleasure of meeting Miguel, who was aware of the rumour and played up to it. Both very funny men. He was a very dignified and humble person whom I also had the pleasure of meeting as I worked with his daughter for a good while. It was her daughter. That whole period was awful for them as a family but he he did his best to remain dignified throughout the whole thing and I think he did it very well. I shan't be letting that spoil my memory of Manuel.
Gordon R
Sian - i think you have hit the nail on the head. Dignity - he had it - the other two couldn't spell it.
bruno22rf
My heartfelt thanks to you Andrew for the countless hours of laughs you have blessed us with for many years and, indeed, for many to come. You were a true gentleman who treated those around you with respect and dignity, if only those who should have known better had returned the favour. The Heron
Best Fawlty episode was when Manuel thought his pet rat was a hamster.
AVB
Best Fawlty episode was when Manuel thought his pet rat was a hamster. Yes Basil the hamster. My favourite was when Basil was hanging the mooses head and, whilst struggling to hold it, asks Manuel to pass the hammer. "Hammer, hammer oh Ham(mer) sandwich" replies Manuel. "No not ham sandwich a hammer" shouts basil. "My hamster". replies Manuel. Classic.
