wildfowler.250
Just wondered what the general opinion is on here with social media and uploading hunting photos/videos? On here it's slightly harder to maybe put a username to a person but I've noticed a lot of folk use Facebook and particularly Instagram to share hunting pictures. It's a good idea to share interests and hobbies but I always worry it will conprmeise home security? Interested to hear any opinions
Velocette
Don't use "social media". Its just another mental illness !

Sha Bu Le
I would not use social media, not face book or twitter or any of them for this purpose. Too many trolls, anti's and bunny huggers, chances are you have your name on whatever media you are using. Not a good idea.

Benthejockey
It's your job to take reasonable precautions against gun theft hence the heavy metal lock box bolted to the wall we all have to have to keep them secure. Higher crime areas may require further security in the shape of an alarm. If some scrote breaks into the house and fancies spending an age with an angle grinder breaking in to steal my guns then that's beyond my control. Posting photos of you on the interwebs of you out shooting shouldn't and can't be seen as anything other than you sharing a picture of you having a good time. Everyone knows I shoot so by the law of averages that means that somewhere, there is some degenerate out there that by association with friends of friends of friends who will also know I've got guns. Now my house has an alarm, a dog and is overlooked by at least 3 different sets of nosy neighbours. If they want to go to all the effort of robbing them then they're welcome to them, chances are their freedom and liberty won't last very long if they do. And should anyone say sharing pictures of my shooting was the cause of the theft I'd laugh them out of my house. Burglars are opportunists and lazy. Breaking into my guns is not going to be worth the effort over robbing the family silver.
AVB
Do scrotes specifically target guns? I suspect they look for easy options and if a gun is left (illegally) lying around they'll nick it.
wandringstar
of course this is social media, every one of us can be traced very easily, best to be careful what you post. I don't touch faceberg or twit or Insta someone took pics of me, and I ended up all over faceberg without my knowledge, I don't like it. HDAV
Social media.......Instrument of the Devil! No that's the "media" If they specifically want guns, they will target a gun shop ! And often leave the S1/S2 stuff behind......Unless that's what they came for and then they come prepared.... People posting pics of their bikes/cars/watches are more likely to attract theft than pictures of dead game and vermin after all the pheaseant in the pic could have been shot with a £50 baikal or a £50,000 Boss....... Wb123
I font but i think everyone else should. Half the reason people are antishooting is lack of exposure. Treating our hobbies as state secrets will just reinforce this.

Westley
Of course they will.as everyone knows shops security is far inferior to the average household. Well, it obviously was on the 2 gun shops that were hit in the North West during the last 18 months.
AVB
Personally I let people who are my 'friends' on facebook that I shoot animals. If any of them got upset by it I would 'de-friend' (I think that is the right term) them. I think we should promote our hobby.
HDAV
How on earth did burglars manage before facebook? I mean it's so easy the number of burglaries must have rocketed in the last 20 years! Over the longer term the CSEW indicates that incidents of burglary have fallen. From the mid-1990s to the 2004/05 survey estimates fell sharply followed by a period of gradual decline with some fluctuations (such as the increase seen in 2010/11). Over the longer term, CSEW estimates for the year ending June 2015 remain 29% lower than those in the 2004/05 survey and 69% lower than those in the 1995 survey.ast 15years https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/bulletins/crimeinenglandandwales/2015-10-15#theft-offences-burglary Never let the facts get in the way of good rant eh gentlemen........now back to the daily mail if you don't mind..... Duckandswing
Pigeonwatch is my only social media fix. I did the main three previously but found it repetitive, full of drama, morons and fakes.

Your right alot are opportunistic, however the more organised ones definitely would, I personally would not post anything on social media that could highlight I own guns, these type of people are not the sort you want in your house at 2a.m, look what they did to digweed (which is mild compared to many). bostonmick
Well, it obviously was on the 2 gun shops that were hit in the North West during the last 18 months. i would wager they were targeted by professional thieves, not the local scroat that lives on the estate, the casual burglar will quite readily take your tv,laptop, jewels, etc because they know if they get caught most likely get six months,or a bit of community service.but get caught with a gun and its almost certain 5 years.
